[i]Kasey Keller[\i]: I'm very fortunate that I don't have four I'm confident in. I have 10 I'm confident in. Ten years ago, I could have given you four. But with the emergence of so many guys, I'm more than happy with 10. Take the starting four from the Trinidad qualifer, who all played well. You could throw Berhalter, Gooch, Jimmy[b] Conway [\b], Eddie Pope, Corey Gibbs, Bocanegra (either there or out left), Vanney to Hejduk to Cherundolo. The key is for the manager to find out who's best for that time. Who's fittest, who's in form, who's performed well of late, but I feel very confident in the crop we have right now. [\quote]

Oh brother. I guess I'm not worried about appealling to or marketing to current anti-USA fans. Their not going to jump ship, so we might as well wait for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th generations. That gives us a few years to work with.

Critics in the Hispanic community, however, say U.S. Soccer's strategy of playing World Cup qualifiers primarily in minor-league markets in hopes of avoiding Hispanic fans passionately supporting U.S. opponents is short-sighted and exclusionary.

"To exclude a group because of a fear you're not going to win is ridiculous," said Jose Alamillo, a professor of comparative ethic studies at Washington State University.
I'm quite sure this guy has no idea that US Soccer apparently offered to host their home qualifier against Mexico in Los Angeles provided Mexico host their home qualifier anywhere other than Azteca.

Hah.... that's even funnier because Conrad's column a few weeks back was about a US soccer official that didn't know his name...

Beyond that, this quote is ridiculous. Can you honestly say that Mexican soccer fans in the US have been excluded? They been catered to more than anglo soccer fans in the US have been. This is one game where US Soccer is seeking a slight competitive advantage. One that is no where near the advantage Mexico gets when they play in the Azteca. Any other game the US plays against Mexico is given to a venue where there is a larger hispanic population. Houston, Dallas, LA, Chicago. Not to mention the dozens of Mexican league exhibitions that are held here in the US to accomodate the Mexican fan who refuses to consume US soccer products. "exclude a group"......get a clue, professor. No other country in the world has to deal with this issue as often as the US does. When Mexico starts playing their games against Costa Rica in their Southernmost stadium so as not to "exclude" Costa Ricans living in Mexico, then we can start talking.

I will say one thing, US soccer and MLS don't market themselves to the hipanic fans. Of course, they barely market to the rest of us anyway.

One question: Can the US soccer website be read in Spanish?

http://www.ussoccer.com/home/default3.sps?iType=8239

I couldn't find it on there, but it might exist. With a nation full of so many Spanish speakers, would that be hard to do?

MLS has tons of hispanic fans. The percentage of hispanic fans at any MLS game is way more than the US population. Why should MLS market to them? There are already there. It is everyone else that they need to market to. Besides, they do plenty to make hispanics feel welcomed, Spanish announcing, bilingual sales reps, participating in Champions Cup and Copa Subamerica, etc. I don't see how anyone can think MLS is not marketing adequately to hispanics. Any more and they risk alienating non-hispanic.

Actually I emailed him about his article and asked him if he knew about this rumor. He replied that it wasn't a rumor. Officials from both USSF and FMF have confirmed it's authenticity.

A city that puts athletic fields out to pasture (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2005/09/02/EDGRIEGMI41.DTL)

Not really MLS related, but interesting, as it shows just how San Francisco is screwing up its soccer community.

Good thing the Earthquakes play fifty miles away...in San Jose. That said, the article shouldn't surprise anyone, that's typical San Francisco for you.

I've been bugging the mayor for years to push for a regional athletic facility at Treasure Island so that the city can host soccer, basketball, baseball or even lacrosse tournaments. It's a can't-miss prospect and could generate a ton of revenue.

Maybe they could build a stadium for the Quakes on Treasure Island, the mythical "center of the Bay Area". :)
