From the AFP:

US coach wants more support for World Cup dream
Wed 31 Aug, 9:18 PM

COLUMBUS, United States (AFP) - A serious World Cup challenge by the United States will require better backing from football supporters, US coach Bruce Arena said as his squad prepares for a qualifying showdown here against Mexico.

Low US interest has condemned the US telecast of Saturday's match, which could clinch a US spot at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, to ESPN Classic, a cable sports network known for showing videotapes of events from bygone days.

"If we want this sport to grow, if we want to truly position ourselves to win a World Cup one day, we need to support the game at a higher level," Arena said in a Wednesday teleconference. "I think it's critical."

Citing the US team's rise from a woeful effort in 1998 at France to the 2002 quater-finals in South Korea, Arena said a similar jump is needed by supporters to enable Americans to join the ranks of football's global elite.

"It's time the American public steps forward and supporters of soccer in this country support our game by watching, by attending games, by buying soccer products, by being good consumers," Arena said.

"It's time for us to put up or shut up."

Arena said he understood how low ratings justify network decisions to dump US matches to lesser-seen outlets.

"It's the job of supporters of soccer in this country to be better supporters of the game," he said. "When we demonstrate better ratings, we have a case to deserve prime time."

The fifth-ranked Mexicans lead qualifying at 5-0 with one draw. The sixth-rated US squad is 5-1, the lone defeat a 2-1 loss at Mexico in March. A win by either would clinch a trip to Germany with three matches remaining.

"What defines where you can rate yourself is the World Cup," Arena said. "You have to show what you are about at the World Cup. Hopefully we will get to show what we can do."

Arena downplayed the idea his team could be a top-eight seeding in Germany, saying lackluster 1994 and 1998 results make it unlikely. But he does like the improvement his team has shown since ousting Mexico at the 2002 World Cup.

"There's a different level of maturity, positive experiences," he said. "We have had momentum since the 2002 World Cup. We've made steady progress. It hasn't always been perfect but you can see there is an air of confidence."

Arena said US-Mexico matches could one day rival the Brazil-Argentina and German-Dutch rivalries but added that smaller regional rivals would keep the continental qualifying a strong preparation for World Cup finals action.

"We haven't outgrown CONCACAF," Arena said. "I think you are going to see the smaller countries will continue to grow and we're going to have a very difficult time qualifying for the 2010 World Cup."

The only major absence from the US roster for Mexico is Manchester United goalkeeper Tim Howard, who is expecting the birth of his first child this week.

My comment:

The nerve of this arrogant SOB to put the blame on the supporters. I have half a mind to tune to some other channel out of spite. He wants to talk about ratings? espuken has been whining about ratings to justify their 2nd class treatment of football since Day One. How can you increase ratings when the network that is supposedly commited to US football consistently maneuvers to keep football a "niche" sport?

Is Arena so clueless? Here I am, for a week telling everyone I run into at the office (and I work in a huge office) about this match and how they should not miss it, and I read that this coach thinks that I'm not doing enough?!

When are US supporters going to stand up and stop treating ABC/espuken like they were our saviours? Haven't you all got it yet? They don't give a rat's ass! We should be "good consumers?" Right. Why don't we do that and tell espuken where to stick their attitude once and for all?

The bottom line is football, even US Men's football, will never achieve ratings to espn's satisfaction because they will never give it the treatment necessary for success. This WC HDTV nonsense is a bone to throw at us. Every four years they throw us a bone just so they can screw us during all the intervening years.

From their annoying commentators to their intelligence-insulting side-by-side commercials to their pathological need to buy the rights to all the major television events in football so they could keep them from US viewers (think Champions League and the WC qualifiers they shunt over to espuken deportes) and their myriad excuses, espuken has proven to be nothing more than a money-grubbing, anti-football snake.

Arena is more than arrogant. He is a fool and a coward. He had an opportunity to take the side of the long-suffering football fan in this country. Instead he preferred to piss on us.

Go USA, but Arena, go kiss my arse.

Um, was there really anything in what Arena said that was wrong? He said that there wasn't enough support from soccer fans and that was why TV networks didn't want to give the USMNT better coverage. Sounds pretty correct to me.

He wasn't attacking people like us. Rather, he was alluding to the fact that there are millions of people associated with soccer in this country that don't do very much to promote the national team.

Wow.

Just. Wow

*shakes head*

Congratulations, sir.

Three posts in , and you already are in the Top 25 bigsoccer idiots on the face of the planet.

I think only InTheNet and Flannigan have done better.

You'll have to show me where he is wrong in any of these statements. Sadly (or judging by many posts, maybe it's for the best), bigsoccer does not represent America at large.

And damn man, if you think he is speaking to you, well, you may have the worst case of "little brother" syndrome on this board. Which is saying an awful lot.

Now if you want to blame certain MLS teams for not promoting rabid passionate support, or the USSF for never having any real clue about how to grow this game in this country, be my guest.

But this...this is just, well sadly typical of posters who can't see past their nose. And I would also suggest you go see a doctor for this really bad case of cranial infarcation you seem to be suffering from

Arena isn't totally blameless here. The success of the Selection isn't our responsibilty. The team can get to "the next level" without NFL-type support. Pardon the obvious, but it's the players, stupid.

In that vein, I think he's talking about putting more money into the league and federation so they can spend more money. I don't see him saying fans will make the players better, but fans will give the league and federation the resources to make the players better.

there are others who are not doing enough. millions of soccer parents and youth in this country pay absolutely no attention to the pro game. those are the people arena is talking about. but they don't care whether or not we do squat in the world cup. they only care that johnny and susie get to play in a good youth league.

arena is saying that all those participants and supporters of youth soccer who outnumber participants and supporters of pro soccer in many other countries must include pro soccer in their support system and then we can take our product to any television entity and call our shots. we won't need espn.

he's absolutely right!!!!

As usuall, Arena is correct, but his ability to deliver his message needs to be improved...

If I was going to be critical at all, is that I think his expectations are too high for where the US is in the "soccer evolution". However, I fully agree that there a lot of soccer "fans" who could do more to support the game.

LOL. Now that is real funny. Can't see past my nose? I think that it's pretty obvious by the replies here that many of you can't look at yourselves as more than supporters of the US national team or US football.

I guess that it is too much to expect that people raised on nothing but espuken would be capable of seeing anything wrong with how they cover football in this country. That includes Arena.

Oh, I'm sorry I've insulted your hero. Well, not really. But it's obvious by the insults thrown at the messenger that some people in US football are just untouchable. The wrath of the disciples be upon all who transgress.

Someone says bliss is ignorance? Oh, yeah. It sure is. As they say, you get what you deserve. espuken loves you very much. Enjoy the scraps, people.

and it's not just the youth level apathy. I couldnt even sell a ticket to the mexico game to anyone on my college's varsity soccer team. The most common excuse: "I'd go, but Michigan is playing Northern Illinois that day" (and btw, I dont go to michigan)

Just going off what you have in bold, Arena's statement is pretty silly. Reminds me of the preacher telling the people in the church that they need to go to church.

I really think that you (andelain) are not getting the meaning of what he is saying. I think when he refers to supporters not doing enough, he doesn't mean USMNT supporters, I think he is refering to the throngs of Eurosnobs and 2nd or third generation americans that ignore American soccer and spend their time energy and money on supporting foreign soccer instead of the product and team here at home. I have a good number of friends that will sit down and watch three or four games a week from europe, but won't give our own national team the time of day. In their minds American soccer is an inferior product. They don't care to take the time to be proven wrong either. We need to convert all of these Americans to get behind our USMNT.

I am almost speechless. Bruce Arena has helped take the US from a pitiful 32 out of 32 in the '98 WC to a top 8 in the 2002 WC finish. That 2002 US squad from top to bottom was certainly not the top 8 most talented team in the WC, yet we were even giving Germany serious fits in the quarterfinal. Anyone who calls Arena an idiot just does not have a clue about his coaching ability. He has earned the right to say things like this about our fans.

And what has he said wrong? As a whole we are arguably the worst supporting soccer nation in the world. Sam's Army can't do it alone. I have seen WC Qualifying games (on TV) in Chile, Argentina, Brazil and the 5 other CONCACAF nations still in the hunt. The passion here isn't even in the same galaxy as it is in these other nations. It's frustrating to watch games in other nations where people are loud and crazy and then watch a home US Qualifier and people sit around like it's a baseball game in May. Arena is frustrated with the lack of support and respect the US give the USMNT despite the fact that we have a pretty solid team now; and you know what, I'd say the same exact thing if I was in his shoes. I'd be just as frustrated.

Calm down man. He wasn't talking about you!!! He was talking about the millions of futbol fans who don't give a damn about MLS or U.S Soccer. (Like many people I know :( )

Arena goes from taking a last-place WC team to quorter-finalists and he gets this crap. Give the man the respect he more than deserves!

Hope you'll be in Cbus. I'll be there rockin with the army.
