Former MetroStar Tim Howard started his English career brilliantly after signing with Manchester United in the spring of 2003, but in the past year he's seen mostly bench time, and his U.S. performances haven't been convincing.

I'm a bit puzzled by this last comment. It sounds like Mahoney is referring to Howard's US performances in the past year, but he's only played one game, and that was a 2-0 win over El Salvador where he had nothing to do. If he's referring to Howard's US performances as a whole, that's not accurate, either. He was terrific in the Confederations Cup and the 2003 friendlies with Argentina and Mexico. Apart from the one soft goal against Poland, he's been outstanding.

Maybe he is talking about Howard's performances in various camps he's been present at?

If you look at the statement in the context that a lot of people would think that since Tim Howard is playing for Manchester United, he would have a lock as the back-up goalkeeper, it makes more sense. I think the statement is meant only to say that Howard's play hasn't distanced him as of yet from a lot of the other gaolkeepers waiting in the wings.
