"running south on Lake Shore Drive, heading into town. just slipping on by on LSD Friday night trouble bound."
Have you ever been to San Diego? E Street in the Gaslamp District has a bunch of good clubs and bars. Its really cool cruising around on E.

Steph, don't worry, Freddie was not on the billboard at the time it was torn to pieces. If anything, this might bring him back sooner!
Thank God Freddie was not injured! whew! Oh yeah and we're all happy you're safe too, Jason. :)
But Freddie, oh my goodness, I thought we were going to have to fly over and put Freddie back together again. (He's much cuter than Humpty Dumpty)
I assure you that I will sleep much better tonight knowing that he is out of harms way. (Oh yeah and you too of course, Jason ;))

Were you in NC then? Most of my family is in that area,
As for the schools, I have read today that the Texas Governor has already stepped up to the plate on this and said the kids there would be enrolled in school. At least one step in the right direction.
Has anyone heard from Jwaldman lately? I hope he's OK.
Yeah, I was living in Raleigh. We moved out there the year after Fran hit. During the time we were there, we had about 3 hurricanes and 2 snow/ice storms that significantly impacted the area around us and to the east.

It's a good place to be from.

Anyone heard of the Pembury Hotel on Seven Sisters Road?
Is it close to Highbury or pubs and restaurants in Islington? Is it an ok place to stay?
Any other recommendations? We are trying to find a place that is reasonably priced in the Islington area.

I just checked out rooms at the Hilton Islington, they have doubles for 107 pounds ($197) a night, not cheap but not bad.
Edit: Its rated 4 stars by Orbitz, want me to PM you a link?

Thanks for your good thoughts, Ash! (I think!) :p
And trust me: no one is happier that Freddie was not up there for this one than my girlfriend. I told her that the CK billboard got shredded and the first thing she said was "Well, that's OK. I didn't like that one as much as when my guy (Freddie) was up there."

For a Hilton in London, that's a pretty good rate. Now, if you want a night in Paris, you'd probably have to take her out for dinner and some heavy drinking. (rimshot)

Wow! That is quite interesting ya water nerd. ;) (you know i couldn't be too glowingly nice w/o a joke or everyone would just think that someone had highjacked my user name :)) Seriously, I was looking at photos earlier in the paper and I never would have guessed that. Cam...our local intellect....
Hey Cam, speaking of this, I know you've mentioned the types of structures that you design before and even showed pictures, but I don't know much of the terminology (side effect of being land-locked in AR...seriously makes you claustrophobic...no lie!). Are the structures that you design similar either in function or in form to the levees that they refer to in NO? Or are these different?
I don't really work on levees, that is for hydraulic civil engineers. I am a coastal engineer and do erosion studies, wave studies, design beach nourishments, jetties, breakwaters, marshes, etc. Basically most stuff that comes in contact with the ocean/gulf. My background is in civil engineering though and know a bit about the other disciplines. That and I'm frickin brilliant! ;) :D

I have a wonderful pre-construction meeting this morning for a breakwater job here in CC. Nothing like talking contract requirements with contractors. After that, I go pick up my mom at the airport. Fun filled day in CCTX! ;) :D

i actually have that one here i think...some where...:) We are debating doing 1 night in Islington area the night of the CL match and flying back the next day 11/3 (in which case that hotel sounds great), but if we extend the trip and stay through sunday and go to the sunderland match on saturday, i wouldn't want to spend that much.
Unlike Cam/Leigh and Steph/Sean, we don't plan on spending all of our time in the hotel room. ;)
Ba da dum!

Final update on this damn storm, as it's moved on to China now. Went out around 1:15 to check on my girlfriend's scooter, which she parked here when she took the bus home on Wednesday. Picked that up and then went for a little walk (by this time, the wind had died and the rain wasn't quite as bad). The storm had knocked over a light post in front of my building (as in took it totally out of the base and smashed it on the ground) and blew out the windows in the electronics store at the corner of my building. The most stunning was at the building next door, where the billboard that WAS sitting on top of it had now come down, metal support structure and all, blocking off an alleyway. There were also places that had no water at all (including my girlfriend's house in the city north of here) and a lot of damage all around. Incredibly, only two died in the storm, though that might rise once they get into the mountains, where the damage is always the worst. Now we're just getting the residual rain from this, so everything gets back to normal tomorrow.
I did realize today though that what happened here really pales in comparison to New Orleans, as I hadn't seen a lot of the video or read many of the statistics. It's almost like the ocean swallowed up New Orleans at this point. They now will basically have to rebuild the entire city. I just hope that everyone takes the time out from all of the political sniping to help these people. Bush already asked his Dad and Clinton to help in the relief effort which is good.
If anyone is interested, my Mom was going to contact a group in Pittsburgh called Brother's Brother to find out about donating to them. It's a group that has relief supplies ready to go at a moment's notice and really helped out with the Asian tsunami in December. All of the proceeds from donations go directly to relief efforts, as there are no administrative costs at all. She was going to call today and, when I get the information, I'll post it here for anyone who is interested.
EDIT: Found the site: www.brothersbrother.org. And there are administrative costs: $.01 out of every $100 donated.
