Well, this has been an interesting night so far. Everyone in Taichung had the afternoon off, but the storm didn't actually hit until 10. This is by far the most powerful storm I've been through. The rain isn't that heavy, but the wind is really and truly powerful as hell. As much as the last one was rocking my building, this one did it twice as bad. It was literally like being on a boat, as it was going back and forth. I was actually feeling nauseous it was so bad. It also succeeded in ripping apart the Calvin Klein billboard across the street where Freddie's picture once stood (proving he was much tougher than the sissy models they have up there now ;) ). It's a bit calmer now, but I suspect that this is just the eye and that more fun will be coming. I have tomorrow off, so, hopefully, I'll get the chance to look over the damage, though I think my apartment will be OK. As I told anti earlier today regarding Katrina, when Mother Nature wants to, she can really make you her bitch.

Keep holding on Jason!!!!

Actually, I passed the time with a marathon session of "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic", with periodic breaks to look out the window.

Yes, I am a total geek.

You know, I got it for Christmas, but haven't played it very much. I think I may have to re-discover it.

Damn, there is also another bad boy right behind it! Hopefully for Jason it moves more to the north!!

Edit: It looks like it is going north (http://www.npmoc.navy.mil/jtwc/warnings/wp1405.gif).

I can't believe they are moving people from the Superdome to the Astrodome, it just seems weird. And why do they focus on the looting? That stuff they're stealing is probably going to be underwater soon, so who gives a sh1t?

The looting they are most concerned with is the stealing of guns and ammo. Don't need all that going on.

As for the move to the Astrodome, what else would you do with them? There are 23,000 in there now, so where do you put that many people? Hotels can't handle it, and who foots the bill. The Astrodome isn't really used for anything anymore, and there is electricity with A/C, running water, working bathrooms, and food facilities. They can set up cots on the field and in concourses I imagine. It looks like NO is going to be shut for quite some time and I doubt many of the people in the Superdome have family elsewhere, or the financial means to live somewhere else right now.

I don't know about the whole Astrodome thing, i mean think about it. You're homeless, your entire city has been destroyed, they move you 300 miles away to an abandoned stadium, and all you can think is "Hey, didn't the Bad News Bears play a game here once?"

On NPR they were complaining about people looting beer and cigarettes. I mean c'mon, if anyone needs a beer and a smoke, its the people of New Orleans right now. Give 'em a break!

Right, the entire city has been destroyed. Where do you put them? Just open the doors to the Superdome and let them loose? What is the next closes big city with a large enough facility to house that many people? Biloxi? Gone. Gulfport? Gone. Jackson? Really screwed up. Mobile? Trashed. Atlanta? No facilities except for maybe the old Olympic village. Jacksonville? Houston? What do you do with 23,000 homeless people and a state that has been destroyed?

Give them immediate relief, then help them figure out how to rebuild there lives.

I was just kidding around Cam, there really is nothing else they can do. The Astrodome is a start, but its gonna take alot more than that to deal with the refugees. The magnitude of this disaster is beyond anything we've seen in the USA in our lifetime.

In a case of unforunate timing, there's a great brewery/restaraunt here in Newark that's having a month-long Cajun themed beer dinner special:

This September, take a trip to the bayou with our Cajun Beer Dinner: Two courses of classic New Orleans fare, expertly matched with two different, handcrafted Iron Hill beers.

Accepting Visa, Mastercard and Cheap Plastic Beads
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
September's perfect pairing will bring you back to New Orleans (just in case you don't remember the first time)...
Featuring....Cajun Catfish Fingers with Creole remoulade and sweet corn relish, paired with a cool Lodestone Lager. Followed by a classic Crawfish and Shrimp Jambalaya paired with an Ironbound Ale. Served every evening in September for $19.95.
Oh, as I was typing this up - just got this email from them:
Due to the overwhelming devastation created by Hurricane Katrina to Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, we will be donating a portion of the proceeds from our Cajun Beer Dinner to the Red Cross.
Disaster Relief
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
$1 of each Cajun Beer Dinner sold will be donated to the Disaster Relief efforts of the Red Cross. Customers who are not interested in purchasing the Beer Dinner will also be able to make a separate donation to the Red Cross at any one of our five locations if they choose to do so.

Unfortunately, the Cajun Beer Dinner was in planning stages for months and until the last two days we never would have believed that this type of damage and destruction could have occurred in the Gulf Coast area. Our heartfelt wishes go out to the incredible number of people who have been affected by this tragedy.

I'm not a big seafood eater, but I'm definitely more inclined to have this dinner today than I was on Monday.

I don't remember the gas lines of the '70s but I have visions of that happening here because the refineries are shut down and they are talking about fuel shortages in the South...... It could be worse though-I could be in NO or MS right now...........
