I'm sure they haven't rerecorded anything. There's plenty of 60's stones material that sounds dated. Mother's Little Helper, all the r&b covers on the first few albums, Their Satanic Majesties Request. Ruby Tuesday, etc etc.

It wasn't until Beggars Banquet that their sound became consistently timeless, mostly because of the heavier american blues influence that was introduced on that album. That's my theory at least.

Beggars Banquet also came out in 1968, the year that most studios switched from four track to eight track tape recorders. The White Album was the first Beatles album recorded on an eight track recorder and sounds alot less dated than Sgt. Pepper's. The only other "Real" Beatles album recorded after the White album was Abbey Road (which also sounds pretty modern, Let It Be doesn't count..). Obviously every Stones album recorded after Beggars benefited sound wise from improved technology as well.
yeah, you don't hear many songs from "Exile on Main Street" on the radio. "Tumbling Dice" is the only one that comes to mind for me.

[QUOTE=antifan]The Beatles were definitely more fun then cool in their heyday, but they haven't gotten any cooler with age, they're kinda boring and lame.

Finally said what so many people have been thinking. Its probably just a generational thing the way old people dislike most of todays music, and in the future we will look back at bands like coldplay and say they were classics, and dislike the new stuff.

Actually, in my opinion - and it's shared by many - Exile is the Stones' best album.

Alot of the Stones music has been remastered, but not rerecorded. The Beatles music has been remastered also. I think the reason that the Beatles are more dated is just the subject matter, it doesn't match up with today's world, and its really pop music. The Beatles were an optomistic band in an optomistic time. When you look at the world today its alot easier to think "Gimme Shelter", than it is to see "Strawberry Fields". Plus theirs a certain coolness factor, the Stones were cool then and their still pretty cool, just as people/icons. The Beatles were definitely more fun then cool in their heyday, but they haven't gotten any cooler with age, they're kinda boring and lame.

I completely agree with the Stones being "cooler", but The Beatles were never lame nor boring in my book.

EDIT: Oh, and I think the Beatles were the hight of cool in the 60s. When Jimi Hendrix covers Sgt. Pepper's two days after it comes out, you're ********ing cool.

See, but I would lump Coldplay in with The Beatles in terms of style.

Hmm... not the fairest comparison in songs but I get your point. The Beatles are a far more optimistic band but mostly by default as they recorded a much greater ratio of their catalog in a much more naive time (and started releasing material two years before the stones). Two of the four greatest stones albums came out after the Beatles had already broke up (sticky fingers and exile).

Strawberry Fields came out in 1967 in the spring before the summer of Love. The Stones two singles from 67' were Let's Spend The Night Together (b-side Ruby Tuesday) and err, We Love You. Not exactly deep stuff.

Remember the Beatles also released Revolution (in 68) and Come Together in 69, the same year that Gimmie Shelter came out. Which is probably a much fairer comparison as the times changed so much over those three years.

But when the 70s came around they got lame really quickly. Breaking up due to their ugly wives. Subsequent lame musical collaborations with those wives. All the stupid, preachy, hippy crap. Not Cool.

Yeah, i figured that. Not the kind of music you can enjoy while reading a Jane Austen novel, huh? LOL ;) :D

Lennon's Imagine collection, kinda of a greatest hits album sounds much more modern than the Beatles stuff, as come of it was recorded ten years later. Its still his distinct voice but much more inline with more typical sounds of the seventies.

He does a cover of Stand By Me that is F***ing cool..........

As far as post-Beatles material goes, it's really slim pickings...

John - Imagine, Plastic Ono Band

George - All Things Must Pass

Paul - McCartney, Band On The Run (most of it), Flaming Pie

Ringo - NOTHING

The Beatles were pretty cool in the 60s,.

Except for when Their Satanic Majesties Request came out, the Stones were the biggest joke in british music press at that point... If they hadent remade themselves so well with Beggars it would've been over and out.

totally agree about Exile on Main St, my favorite Stones album.

and anti, the Beatles were done by 1970!

and I actually don't think the Stones are very "cool" now. A bunch of old dudes rocking out to songs that they wrote in the 60s and 70s is not my idea of cool. That being said, I do really like the Stones

I've found it doesn't pay to put too much faith in the opinions of the british music press. Unless you think that Oasis is a timeless act.

I guess that is substantially better than Rilee Rock or Rilee Hulk or Rilee Apple , Rilee Coco, or Rilee Bean or any of the other lame names that celebs, etc have been torturing their children with..... :D
I guess that my hubby would not want to name our next child Thierry Fredrik Francesc Dennis Harris...... sadly..... ;)
I know I'm getting in on this late, but this reminded me of a story where a couple in Florida who were huge Penguins fans named their son Mario Jaromir (I think that's what it was). I've already decided that, no matter what the actual name of my first kid is, when the name gets registered, it will start with "His/Her Royal Majesty..." :D

I don't know, Mick is still screwing every supermodel in the world, and Keith is still alive, that's pretty cool. Their concerts now probably aren't really that cool, that's why i have no plans of going (even though i probably should). But those albums are timeless, and they are the coolest.

Heh, that was forty years ago... not quite the same. The stones tried to jump on the psychedlic bandwagon and did so pretty horribly. No one bought the album. Instead of being scene leaders they were being scene followers. It was obvious and very very uncool. Then came the golden age...
