Coming from Lincoln NE, we can either go east on I80 to Davenport IA, then head southeast on I74 to Indianapolis, OR start going south to KC, then northeast on I70 to Indianapolis.
According to mapquest, the difference is only 8 miles, which is easily made up for if one route is better than another.
Anyone who travels east/west across Iowa/Missourri/Illinois frequently, please help me decide which route is best (ie less traffic, better roads, less construction, etc..)
PS, I know this has probably been covered, but I couldnt find it anywhere, most info on here is coming from the east.
Thanks! :D

Your best bet is to go the 80/74/70 route. Dealing with Dead Moines and the Quad Cities' traffic is probably preferable to Kansas City and St. Louis.
Just mind the speed traps in Omaha and plan for an extra 15-30 minutes on the Missouri River bridge bottleneck. :p

The I-74 bridge over the river in Peoria is closed. I don't know how long the detour is. Although going I-74 you miss KC and St Louis.
I don't recall any other major projects along those routes, but I'm sure there's always something.

i would suspect it wouldn't be very far...
and i would imagine lighter traffic along this route

If you take I-80 across Iowa, don't take the I235 shortcut through Des Moines. It's a mess.
Iowa just changed the speed limit from 65 to 70 on interstate, but increased fines for speeding and promised to cut down on leniency for speeders. I haven't fully tested them yet. But I'm going about 75 now instead of 72-73.

I've rarely had problems at the Missouri River. If I expect traffic, I always go I-80 north of Omaha.

Crossing the I-80 bridge anytime between 4 and 6 can be slow going, though it's far worse going east than west.
The road that loops north is I-680, BTW.
