This one is purely for goalscorers. Players that put the ball in the back of the net. I would say Raul because he rarely chokes when he is really close to the goal and knows where to run off the ball.

raul's been garbage for the past 2 seasons.

Ruud. Makes goals out of nothing and scores with his head, r or l foot, knee, whatever.

I meant players in their prime.

Even in his prime, Raul would still be outclassed by the likes of Rvn, Sheva, Henry, and Makaay who for my money is the best at this moment.

Henry

From the past the best finisher has to be Gerd Muller. No question.

The best finisher playing today I think must be Shevchenko. He is always clinical. I still rate Shearer, but he is obviously past his best. Although he is not the finished article, Leroy Lita, now at Reading is lethal from 2 yards. He is one for the future and you heard it here first.

When fit, it's between Ruud and Makaay.

If Ronaldo wasn't mentioned then it's obvious that we think better than Ronaldo.

Look at the scoring records of Ruud and Makaay.

better than ronaldo in his prime? If Ronaldo wasn't mentioned then it's obvious that we think better than Ronaldo. He read it; he just couldn't believe it.

One could have a reasonable discussion as to whether today he's the equal of all of those you mentioned; but there's no discussion that on his best form he easily was their equal, and probably was better.

How can you think Ronaldo isn't right up there with his contemporaries when considering their best form? In the greatest striker debates you kept urging people to go to the numbers. Here are Ronaldo's numbers compared to his peers: http://www.soccer-europe.com/Data/Rankings/TopStrikers.html

Ronaldo is statistically the best finisher of his generation. Given his statistical leadership taking into account pre and post-injury games, its hard to imagine him not being the clear no.1 prior to the two ligament surgeries.

[Additionally, we all loosely use the word "prime" to describe Ronaldo pre-injury. Scheva is currently in his prime; Makaay is in his prime; Ronaldo never reached his prime during his pre-injury days...he would be there today. Back then he was merely in his ascendency.]

He's still one of the most lethal finishers in the game. We'll see by seasons end just how clearly that is the case.

A good argument can be made for today's best finisher being any of Scheva, Ronaldo, Adriano, Makaay, RvN. I'd give a slight edge to Scheva right now for being most complete.

Henry is a fantastic striker, but I don't consider him a great finisher in the mold of the guys above. His compatriot Trezeguet is more of a finisher, with Thierry a much better player overall (as good as the guys metioned above).
