Marseille president Pape Diouf has not ruled out a move for Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse.

The struggling Ligue 1 club are looking to boost their attack after a dismal start to the new season in France, with l'OM failing to register a win in their opening five matches.

Cisse's future at Anfield has been put into doubt, with ongoing reports that the Merseyside giants are trying to bring Real Madrid's Michael Owen back to the club before Wednesday's transfer window deadline.

The former Auxerre man has been linked with a return to France and the Stade Velodrome club but the France international is keen to stay with Rafa Benitez's men.

With time running out for Marseille to sign new players, Diouf remains hopeful a deal can be struck to bring Cisse to the South of France.

"It's complicated with Cisse," admitted Diouf. "But this is not over.

"I am waiting to see how things go but as I have always said, it's a complicated situation."

Despite the focus on landing a striker, Marseille boss Jean Fernandez says his side are more in need of a centre back.

Fernandez feels his backline needs strengthening immediately after a poor start to the new campaign.

"We need a central defender, that's what I want and I have already told the managers Pape Diouf and Jose Anigo," said Fernandez.

Former Roma man Traianos Dellas has been mentioned as a possible target, while Standard Liege's Ivica Dragutinovic has also caught the eye of the club.

Marseille sporting director Anigo is thought to have had a closer look at the Serbian defender during Standard's 3-2 win at La Louviere in the Belgian Jupiler League on Saturday.

if cissé keeps up the way he is now and he ends up in marseilles, then it's rafa that's crazy. one wonders what djibril would have to do to be considered a key player for liverpool instead of transfer bait.
