I don't see this Bayern team getting beat in the Bundesliga, we are far and away the best team in the bundesliga. Who is even close to beating us, Stuttgart? Hamburg? Schalke?

Lol.
Regarding Uli Hesse-Lichtenberger, did you know that he is partly in charge of Benny Lauth's website? Check out Lauth's website. (http://www.benny-lauth.de/?801A0) He is credited with being partly responsible for the editorial department!
There were some interesting chapters in Uli's write-up on Makaay and Müller:
In some ways, Müller is a bigger icon in Germany than Franz Beckenbauer or Fritz Walter. There are many reasons for this, which we don't have the time to delve into here, but among them is the fact he played in the one single position which allows us to measure his class halfway accurately.
Interesting notion, backed up with the poll held two years ago about who was the greatest ever Bundesliga player, which Gerd won (to his amazament in front of Franz).
Müller scored 365 goals in 427 league games, for an average of 0.85 goals per game. That's staggering enough, but wait until you see the fine print. To begin with, Müller didn't really have ups and downs as such. He scored 28 goals in his second season, at age 21. He also scored 28 goals in his twelfth season, at age 31. In 1970-71, he netted 22 goals as a member of the hugely talented side that lost the title only on the very last day (when he was suspended).
He is right that Müller never had a "downs" seasons like some other greats sometimes have, but he did have some lows when he wouldn't score for sometimes months! (beginning of 1966, end of 1967, end of 1970 and end of 1974). For example Müller only scored 4 goals (among them 2 penalties) in all of the first 17 games of the 1967-68 season. However it was typical of Müller to end such a drought with a real comeback in forms of massive goal scoring, which always assured that he would at least score 20 goals at the end of the season.
Seven years later, he played in the terrible team that would stumble home in 12th place, Bayern's worst-ever league finish. Despite no support to speak of, Müller still found the target 24 times.
Very true. It was the first year Bayern had to play without Beckenbauer in the double role of libero and playmaker. Beckenbauer's creativity was suddenly gone and it was decided that Gerd Müller would have to partially fill the void by having to play deep in the midfield. It was amazing that Müller in his new role of part-time-midfield player still scored 24 times in a team that really had immense problems on and off the pitch.
At this point, detractors could argue we first have to determine the relative strength or weakness of a domestic league - but with Müller, you don't. That's because his record on the international stage is, believe it or not, even better than his Bundesliga numbers.
He chalked up more goals than appearances for West Germany - 68 in 62 matches. Yes, sometimes he'd score four against a minnow like Albania (April 8, 1967). But he also scored four against the USSR (May 26, 1972), a mere month before the Soviets would reach the final of the European Championships.
And European football, I hear you yell? Well, brace yourself. Müller played 74 matches in the various continental competitions and came away with 66 goals, for an average of 0.89 goals per match. Eusébio scored nine goals less, even though he has two more appearances, while Alfredo Di Stéfano's average stands at a fantastic-but-yet-not-good-enough 0.76.
Indeed. It is telling that Müller actually managed to top every all-time goal scorers chart of every competition he played in, be it domestic or international! Be it the World Cup, the European Championship, the European Cup, the Bundesliga or the German Cup competition - he is the leading goal scorer in every one of them. Amazing feat which doesn't get outlined often enough.
And all those uncanny Müller stats, we should now mention, belong to a man who was neither a gifted dribbler nor fleet-footed nor a threat in the air - and who was shy to the point of being timid.
In other words, popular wisdom has it that Müller occupies a pretty deserted realm, a place where laws of nature don't apply. A genius like Pelé, a talent like Maradona, an artist like Beckenbauer - all these people have remained halfway human even while weaving their magic, because you could understand what they did, even though you wouldn't have been able to duplicate it.
Very well put. If there has ever been a player worthy being labelled "phenomenon", then it is probably Müller, as he really was not that outstanding as a footballer, but still managed to score all of the time, heaven knows how. A phenomenon in the true sense of the word. He made goal scoring look easy, sometimes even banal, but heck we all know how difficult it is for mere mortals.
Like I said, that's popular wisdom. But is it true? Makaay, following his 87th-minute solo against Hertha on Saturday, now has six goals from three games. Most people point out that he will fall short even if he would score a goal per game from now on until the end of the season. But Müller only had one goal after three games in 1971-72 (and had missed a penalty).
In fact he actually missed at least three penalties at the start of the season (August - October), then right full back Johnny Hansen tried to convert the next penalty and he also missed. After that, Müller got back to shooting the penalties, but he already missed the first one yet again! Müller stated that he would never try his luck at a penalty again and teammate Franz "Bulle" Roth became the permanent penalty taker at Bayern for the rest of the season. Now despite not shooting any penalties Müller still scored his 40 goals, if he hadn't wasted these penalties at the start, he would have ended up with 47 goals that season! (counting all penalties Bayern was given in 71-72 [IIRC]).
BTW, my prediction for Makaay this year is 26 Bundesliga goals.

Excellent work, btw, Pipin!
I dug out the following tidbits which I had posted after the Leverkusen game (adjusted after the Hertha game):
#1 Makaay leads the goal scoring chart with 6 goals after three games. The all-time Bundesliga record in this respect is still held by Gerd Müller who once scored 7 goals in the first three games (in 1977-78 season; 2 against Stuttgart, 4 against St. Pauli and 1 vs. Düsseldorf).
#2 Makaay has now scored 16 goals in his last 8 Bundesliga games. Gerd Müller once scored 16 goals in 7 Bundesliga games (February-April 1972; unlike Makaay, he didn't score in every one of those games).
#3 This is how the old "most wins in a row" record came about:
01. 04/04/81: Bochum 1 Bayern 3 [goals: Breitner, Rummenigge, Horsmann]
02. 11/04/81: Bayern 5 Duisburg 1 [goals: Rummenigge 4, Mathy]
03. 18/04/81: Nürnberg 0 Bayern 1 [goal: Rummenigge]
04. 09/05/81: Bayern 3 Kaiserslautern 0 [goals: Breitner 2, Niedermayer]
05. 16/05/81: Köln 0 Bayern 3 [goals: Breitner, D Hoeness, Niedermayer]
06. 30/05/81: Bayern 7 Frankfurt 2 [goals: Breitner 3, Rummenigge 2, D Hoeness, Kraus]
07. 06/06/81: Mönchengladbach 1 Bayern 4 [goals: Rummenigge 3, Niedermayer]
08. 13/06/81: Bayern 4 Uerdingen 0 [goals: Rummenigge 2, Niedermayer, Mathy]
09. 08/08/81: Bayern 6 Leverkusen 2 [goals: Breitner 2, Rummenigge, Dremmler, D Hoeness, Niedermayer]
10. 15/08/81: Darmstadt 1 Bayern 2 [goals. D Hoeness, Niedermayer]
11. 22/08/81: Bayern 3 Bremen 1 [goals: D Hoeness 2, Rummenigge]
12. 26/08/81: Düsseldorf 1 Bayern 2 [goals: D Hoeness, Kraus]
13. 05/09/81: Bayern 4 Karlsruhe 1 [goals: Breitner 2, Rummenigge, Augenthaler]
13 straight wins and then came a 1-3 loss at Braunschweig to end this great record run.
Here is how the current run came about:
01. 19/03/05: Bayern 3 Rostock 1 [goals: Lucio, Pizarro, Ballack]
02. 02/04/05: Wolfsburg 0 Bayern 3 [goals: Schweinsteiger, Frings, own goal Hofland]
03. 09/04/05: Bayern 2 Mönchengladbach 1 [goals: Ballack, Scholl]
04. 16/04/05: Hannover 0 Bayern 1 [goal: Hargreaves]
05. 23/04/05: Bayern 3 Bochum 1 [goals: Pizarro, Ballack, Makaay]
06. 30/04/05: Kaiserslautern 0 Bayern 4 [goals: Makaay 3, Ballack]
07. 07/05/05: Mainz 2 Bayern 4 [goals: Makaay 3, Ballack]
08. 14/05/05: Bayern 6 Nürnberg 3 [goals: Makaay 2, Deisler 2, Ballack, Pizarro]
09. 21/05/05: Stuttgart 1 Bayern 3 [goals: Makaay, Ballack, Salihamidzic]
10. 05/08/05: Bayern 3 Mönchengladbach 0 [goals: Makaay 2, Hargreaves]
11. 13/08/05: Leverkusen 2 Bayern 5 [goals: Makaay 3, Karimi, Ballack]
12. 27/08/05: Bayern 3 Hertha 0 [goals: Makaay, Ballack, Scholl]
Only one more win needed!

Thanks yet again Gregoriak...
interesting, K-H R. had 13 goals during that run and Makaay has 16 in this run....Rummenigge was actually proclaimed to be the best striker in the world in his time....Maakay is outdoing him in this instance, and doesn't get enough recognition.
Who will stop our run?

They'll lose one or two. Maybe. I think Bremen will take one and maybe Schalke.
I think you guys stand a chance of winning the league by a record margin.
S#it. I think you will do that.

NOt to be too pessimistic but I really don't think this form will last throughout the season....scoring that many goals each game, especially Makaay.....just don't know about that...

We missed one major record that Bayern already established when they won at Leverkusen:
It was their 6th consecutive away win, the previous record had been 5 straight away wins (established by Bayern in 1971).
This win at Nuremberg was their 7th straight away victory.

In case folks are wondering how many consecutive home victories it would take Bayern to break the previous record: 26! Bayern won 25 times in a row at home from 13 March 1971 to 26 May 1973.
The current Bayern team has managed 10 consecutive home wins in a row, a possible win over Hannover next Saturday would be the 11th...

Now that one of the major Bundesliga records has been broken by Bayern (most wins in a row), it may be time to look at what could be targeted next in terms of Bundesliga records:
Bayern have so far been unbeaten in 14 straight Bundesliga games. The all-time record is still held by Hamburg SV, who were unbeaten 36 games in a row from 16 January 1982 to 29 January 1983 - over 1 year unbeaten! I can't imagine any club coming close to this run, not even the current Bayern side. 22 further unbeaten games are clearly too much. Won't happen.
Bayern has now been unbeaten for 7 straight Bundesliga away games - way to go, as the all-time record are 26 unbeaten away games in a row. Established by Bayern between 14 December 1985 and 1 August 1987. Looks very unlikely to be broken by this current Bayern side.
Bayern's last defeat at home dates back to 16 October 2004. Since then they have remained unbeaten at home in 16 straight games. The all-time record however is definitely out of reach, as Bayern was unbeaten 73 straight Bundesliga games at home from 11 April 1970 to 28 September 1974 - four and a half years! This is probably Bayern's most awesome Bundesliga record.
What is definitely in the reach the current Bayern's is the most won games at the start of the season record, which is currently held by Bayern (95/96) and Kaiserslautern (01/02) - 7 consecutive wins each. Bayern currently stands at 5 consecutive wins at the start of the season. Bad omen however is that neither Bayern nor Lautern went on to win the Championship at the end of these seasons.
Finally, Bayern have remained unbeaten in the first 5 games of the season. The all-time record are 23 unbeaten games at the start of a season, a record that was established by Bayern between 23 July 1988 and 25 March 1989. I don't think the current Bayern side will touch this record...

Bayern have now won 14 consecutive home games.
From last season:
Bayern 3-0 HSV (Makaay, Pizarro, Schweinsteiger)
Bayern 2-0 Leverkusen (Makaay, Guerrero)
Bayern 5-0 Dortmund (Makaay 3, Pizarro, Salihamidzic)
Bayern 1-0 Werder (Demichelis)
Bayern 3-1 Rostock (Lucio, Pizarro, Ballack)
Bayern 2-1 Gladbach (Scholl, Ballack)
Bayern 3-1 Bochum (Makaay, Pizarro, Ballack)
Bayern 6-3 Nürnberg (Makaay 2, Deisler 2, Ballack, Pizarro)
This season:
Bayern 3-0 Gladbach (Makaay 2, Hargreaves)
Bayern 3-0 Hertha (Makaay, Ballack, Scholl)
Bayern 1-0 Hannover (Demichelis)
Bayern 2-0 Wolfsburg (Santacruz, Lucio)
Bayern 4-0 Duisburg (Ballack, Santacruz, Pizarro, Ze Roberto)
Bayern 3-1 Werder (Makaay, Schweinsteiger, Pizarro)
However I don't think they will break the old record, which stands at 26 consecutive wins at home, established by Bayern between 27 November 1971 and 26 May 1973:
From the 1971-72 season:
Bayern 11-1 Dortmund (Müller 4, U Hoeness 2, Roth 2, Beckenbauer, Breitner, Hoffman)
Bayern 1-0 Hertha (Schneider)
Bayern 7-0 Oberhausen (Müller 5, Sühnholz, Krauthausen)
Bayern 3-1 Kaiserslautern (Müller 2, Roth)
Bayern 5-1 Bochum (Müller 3, Krauthausen, own goal Fechner)
Bayern 6-2 Bremen (Müller 3, U Hoeness, Krauthausen, Sühnholz)
Bayern 3-1 Hannover (U Hoeness 2, Roth)
Bayern 4-3 Hamburg (Müller 2, U Hoeness, Roth)
Bayern 6-3 Frankfurt (Müller 3, Zobel 2, Beckenbauer)
Bayern 5-1 Schalke (Hansen, Breitner, Beckenbauer, U Hoeness, Hoffmann)
From the 1972-73 season:
Bayern 2-1 Bremen (Müller, Schneider)
Bayern 4-0 Hertha (Müller 2, U Hoeness, Beckenbauer)
Bayern 5-0 Schalke (Hoffmann 2, Müller, Roth, U Hoeness)
Bayern 3-0 Gladbach (Müller 2, U Hoeness)
Bayern 2-0 Duisburg (Müller, Roth)
Bayern 7-2 Hannover (Müller 4, Krauthausen 2, Breitner)
Bayern 3-2 Düsseldorf (U Hoeness 2, Beckenbauer)
Bayern 3-1 Offenbach (Müller 2, Beckenbauer)
Bayern 5-3 Oberhausen (Müller 2, U Hoeness, Hoffmann, own goal Hollmann)
Bayern 3-0 Braunschweig (Müller, U Hoeness, Hoffmann)
Bayern 4-1 Wuppertal (Müller, U Hoeness, Dürnberger, Hoffmann)
Bayern 3-1 Frankfurt (Beckenbauer, Breitner, Schneider)
Bayern 5-1 Stuttgart (Müller 2, Beckenbauer, Breitner, Schneider)
Bayern 1-0 Hamburg (Müller)
Bayern 6-0 Kaiserslautern (Müller 5, U Hoeness)
Bayern 5-1 Bochum (Müller 2, Dürnberger, Breitner, Hoffmann)
A neat little run!
