if the rightback (el lateral) goes up and attacks u must be back to help defend. also, if that right back does play his line well, make some runs. (especially if u catch him flat footed)

Well there's two ways of playing it really. You could be the traditional winger who tries to get down to the goal-line and puts in crosses, or you can be more of a 'left-midfield' than a left winger and tuck inside to support your central midfielders (this is what often happens when the full-back behind you is very attacking).

If you have the pace for it you'll probably want to be the first type, in which case your job is to get as many balls into the box for your strikers as you can. Your crossing should be consistent and you should be giving your opposing full-back so many problems he can't attack. If he does attack you need to track back and mark him.

As for tracking back and helping out your full-back in general, it depends on how good he is, how your coach wants you to play and how the game is going. I've played games where I did more tackling than the guy behind me because he was under so much pressure but I think the week before I barely had to go into my own half because we were so comfortable and I could just concentrate on attacking.

I personally don't have the pace to be a Christiano Ronaldo type winger but I can play in central midfield too so it's natural for me to tuck inside a bit, tackle back a lot and do a lot of passing; more like the way David Beckham and Andy Reid play.

What I'd suggest is work out what type of player you are (what your attributes are) and try to watch games with players similar to you so you get a good idea of positioning and overall tactics. I'd also suggest talking to your coach about how he wants you to play.

My theory of playing left mid is crack one and cross or go for a crack one and go for a shot sort of like CRonaldo. See wat u do is when you recieve the ball in the flank brake one and when youre open cross it to a forward. If you recieve it not so much close to the flank try to brake one and go for the shot or a unexpected pass to a open man. I try to make my runs whenver any of my team mates are going up, uncover my self and recieve, I try to come down every time it is when the opponent has the ball.

Drift to the center and wait for overlaps if your not faster than the right back.

It really depends on the system you play. In my area, a typical HS/amateur formation looks pretty much like this:

---------SW---------
---RB---------LB----
---------Stopper----
----------CM--------
RM----------------LM
----------AM--------
-----ST------ST

In a formation such as this, the absence of a second CB means your fullbacks really must pinch in and therefore many of the runs made to the touchline by the opposing wingers become your responsibility. As far as attacking goes, your priority is to stay wide and draw the opposing fullbacks and DM out of the middle, creating space for your AM and strikers to play. You don't get the ball terribly often, but when you do you'll more often than not be right on the touchline, and you'll have to deliver a cross. In this formation, you can't be an all-out, English-style attacking winger, but you can't tuck in either, so you're kind of in limbo. The most important thing is to stay wide, make sure you track back on the opposing wingers, and every time your CM/AM gets the ball in midfield, you make a run, even if you're certain you won't get the ball. Often you'll only get it once for every 15-20 runs you make. Needless to say, you must be very fit to play effectively in this way.

Same things you would do as a right wing.

"like when do i come back and defend?"

When your team loses the ball make sure your recovery run is inside the field and not outside the player with the ball. You can't defend from that position..

"when do i make my runs down the line?"

Once the dribblers head comes up. Until that time you are a short pass option for who ever has the ball from the middle of the field to your side of the field. That includes when your keeper has the ball.

So if you do that you will find when your team loses the ball your defensive recovery runs will be a lot shorter and you will get less tired.

"any comments about what i must do when i play left mid?"

Attack space any where on the field when you see it. So don't always be on the left side. So you won't disappear in games. You see defensive pressure moving to your side? Get out and move somewhere into new space at those times.

Be able to make a good cross from the left side.

Beat a player on the flank then move inside the field with the ball to avoid the second defender. That will put you in a position to pass or shoot on goal.

get in the other guys head early (their right mid)... if u make a few long runs that are effective early, they will think more defensively and probably become lazy on their attacking...

Master the offside line. It's great to have a winger who runs constantly behind the defense but isn't offside.
