I want the World Cup in any country that can run the tournament efficiently and safely, in multiple fantastic, world-class soccer stadiums.

Right now, there are no countries in eastern Europe who fit the bill. The only ones who might be close are the Czech Republic, Poland, and Greece.

Safety is a big concern. However, if South Africa gets 2010(I myself thought it was good idea to hold in South Africa), Eastern Europe should not be a problem.

Seems like Russia could host eventually.

I agree. However, I have no doubt that the decision to hold the WC in South Africa was primarily political in nature. I don't see Eastern Europe tugging at as many strings at FIFA as South Africa (or Africa in general) has been able to. By the same token, I just can't conceive that RSA will be able to put on a World Cup worthy of the name. Eastern Europe is at least 20 years away (and any African country should be as well).

Better to try to host the Euro championships, first.

Five candidates for EURO 2012

The national associations of Croatia/Hungary (joint bid), Greece, Italy, Poland/Ukraine (joint bid) and Turkey have handed their bid dossiers to UEFA by the stipulated deadline. Russia, Romania and Azerbaijan had previously expressed an interest but have not pursued their bids.

The UEFA Executive Committee will then reduce the number of candidates to three on 7 November 2005. The final decision on the host(s) of UEFA EURO 2012 will be taken by the Executive Committee in December 2006.

Well, South Africa did well with Rubgy and Cricket World Cup Finals. They had an advantage over African countries and Eastern Europe in terms of selection process. The Moscow Olympics are perhaps the only major sporting event held in the East. In time, Russia probably will get a Finals. Th4ey have been pouring money into the game the last few years. In the modern world, money is the key.

the Czech Republic or Poland would be great. Maybe even Ukraine and Hungary , they could make a comeback to the WC if they were to host it.

between them, those countries only have 2 stadiums that fit the world cup minimum capacity requirements. Without a lowering of the capacity levels, I can't see any way that any east european country will be able to host. Russia is probably the most likely candidate, but even Russia is a long way short.

People often say South Africa has no chance of pulling it off, but that's, I guess, because they have no idea about the popularity of rugby and don't know about the rugby stadiums already there.

There is no country in the world who would, if given a WC, fail to organize it properly. Now, how would that effect that country's economy is another thing. ;)

does FIFA help poorer contries economically or they have to spend their own money to organize tournaments???
