In London you can get a phone unlocked everywhere. I couldn't believe it when I was in Chicago, none of the stors had my mobile. It does seem to be behind Europe with that kind of thing. You need a tri-band phone and thats all.
You can buy sim cards everywhere here and in Europe. Thats the best and cheapest way of doing things. Renting a phone will cost the earth.
yes...the US is years behind the rest of the world in mobiles. annoying as hell for mobile junkies like me. plus, the carrier with the best coverage (verizon) is CDMA and really fascist. Would you believe that they sold bluetooth phones with the capability disabled so that they could control what people put on their mobiles? ridiculous.

verizon DOES have great coverage, i remember being able to make and receive calls from the top of Haleakala in Maui. but...after a while, their restrictive policies on simple things like ringtones, wallpaper, and transferring cameraphone pictures to your own PC (!!!) got on my nerves. switched to t-mobile and then cingular, neither of which has given me any problems signal-wise (then again i am in SoCal, coverage towers everywhere) and i have a bunch of unlocked techie phones i just swap SIMs in when i travel.

indeed...i've got a k750i with tons of memory and a 2 megapixel camera. i use it for everything - mp3s, photos, video, porn, internet, and sometimes phone calls.
did i say porn out loud?

there's plenty of bluetooth phones here but the carriers dont really push it as a capability. the way the market has developed in the US, people see their mobiles as...phones! they use them for phone calls and texting. They dont see them as the fabulous toys they really are :D

We are so far behind that, while i have heard of bluetooth, i have no idea what it is actually.............though i did recently see a blackberry.
and i get along just fine without them..........
if i had anymore technology to distract me, I'd be in bad shape.
