A bunch more from the Senor Futbol article.
If you can get a copy, it's number 303. Good article about Manuel Echavarri who was able to compile 1000 nicknames used between 1920 and 2000. He's not currently thinking of writing a book about this and states he did it out of love for the game. It took him seven years. If nothing else it brings back good memories. I didn't see all of the following play since they are a bit before my time, still here goes -
"Chamagol" Gonzales
"Rambo" Sosa
"Capitan Furia" Alfredo Tena
"Piojo" Herrera
"Harlem" Medina
"Halcon" Pena
"Gonini" Vazques Ayala
"Cuchillo" Herrera
"Bruja" Scoponni
"Siete Pulmones" Pedro Najera
"Pirracas" Castellanos
"Dumbo" Lopez
"Zulli" Ledezma
"Pichojos" Perez
"Snoopy" Perez
"Lagarto" Fleita
"Wendy" Mendizabal
Miguel Angel "Pueblita" Fuentes
Javier "Pierna Fuerte" Sanchez Galindo
"Pititos" Torres
"Chocolate" Garcia
"Leon de las Canchas" Tono Aspiri
"Espatula" Rodriguez
"Pachuco" Lopez

Most nic names when translated lose their essence. Like "el Diablo" Etcheverry no one really calls him The Devil cos it doesnt sound catchy as el Diablo. Other nic names will make more sense or sound just as good when translated. I remeber when Martin "el Pulpo" (Octopus) Zuniga was Chivas starting keeper. In one game against Club America (Friendly) he blocked five staright penalty shots !!! Another keepers name that you will be familiar with is Kevin "El Gato" Heartman. Some of the best nic names that sound just as good in English are "El Abuelo" (Grandpa) Cruz, Marcelo "Matador" Salas, Ignacio "Gonzo" Gonzales and Gabriel "Girafa" (Giraffe) De Anda.

Esto es una prueba para ver si tienes agilidad mental con las palabras, pero lo debes hacer este juego lo más rápido posible.
>FRASE a repetir: "Mi moto alpina derrapante".
Dilo ahora con puras letras A: "...ma mata alpana darrapanta"
Muy bien, ahora con la letra O: "...mo moto olpono dorroponto"
>¡¡Genial...!!! Hazlo ahora más difícil, tu solita con la letra E:

Thanks amigos. Some of those are very interesting and amusing. My favorite all-time soccer nickname, although not in the Mexican league and thus off-topic, is chubby Brazilian Ailton of Werder Bremen. His nickname is "Der Kugelblitz" - the "Ball of Lightning".
p.s. How exactly die "Espatula" Rodriguez earn his nickname? I can't even begin guess.
