Jeez Kent, talk about having absolutely no faith in our boys. An MLS select team would fair pretty well in the Primera division over the course of the year, and RM did lose a few games to Primera opponents last year. In the words of Herb Brooks, "If we played them 10 times, they might win 9, but not today, today, we are the greatest hockey [soccer] team on the face of the Earth.

Hmmmm, Kent's lede looks very familiar.
Nathaniel Whalen's story from the Daily Southtown on Aug. 10 (http://www.dailysouthtown.com/southtown/dssports/pro/102sd6.htm)
For Chicago Fire midfielder Justin Mapp, it is the difference between playing in Rochester, N.Y., or in Madrid, Spain.
It is a choice between playing the Raging Rhinos of the USL First Division, a minor league in a minor-league country, or Real Madrid, one of the best soccer clubs in the world.
For Mapp, the choice was obvious, which is why he’s in Madrid today to play Real Madrid in the Trofeo Santiago Bernabeu tournament, a prestigious soccer event in Europe.
It would be easy for most people to decide if given the choice either of Madrid, Spain, or Rochester, N.Y., as travel destinations.
Fire head coach Dave Sarachan was presented with that choice, and for him, it was easy. Rochester all the way.

Lack of cohesion playing together likely to be the biggest issue for the MLS team.
Enjoy Zidane while you can people. This man is a legend - one of the all-time greats.

Palencia speaks out ...
I wasn't surprised by the level of play because I'd
seen it before. I knew what I'd find, and I was
satisfied with my first appearance. I believe that the
league has grown a lot, but the refereeing still
hasn't. If MLS wants to be a competitive league, it
should fix the situation. I'm not bothered so much by
the two penalties, but I am by the five minutes of
time added on at the end, because there wasn't that
much lost time. The refereeing ought to be at the
level of the league.

I never thought I would find myself agreeing with Palencia on anything, but he is right. The MLS/USSF needs to allay these concerns before they lose some high profile people like Guevara.

I particularly like this quote from Djorkaeff:
Added Djorkaeff: "I'm a European player, an international player and the more you play the better you are. If you looking for rest, you are not fit."
Geez, no wonder Landon can't cut it in z Europe. Djorkaeff, although hurt and most likely a bit exhausted, wants to play in this match. He knows what a rare chance this is to play in Madrid and against Real. I guess Landon just has absolutely NO DESIRE to show well in Europe which is discouraging to me. Only after the fact he's in Madrid does he change his tune.

Has it occured to you that, b/c he's a pro and b/c he's competitive, that he's stepped up to the challenge?
Look: his club team is in a funk and they finally had a decent game. Theyfinally had some luck go their way, after 2 months of every frickin' ball/call (seemingly) going against them.
They're in the US Open Cup. Against their arch-rival. Against whom he had a bad game.
And they've got a critical match-up this weekend. Against their arch-rival. In their stadium. In front of the largest crowd of the season (at least 20K).
Maybe THAT has something to do w/ his reluctance to travel 11,000 miles and 9 time zones in 3 days.

Selection MLS (Major League Soccer) landed yesterday in different turns and some of their players visited the Museum of the Prado and not the Museum of the Jamón, which honors to them. He is not frequent to see a soccer player in a pinacoteca. It is until unusual. After stopping a good short while before the Meninas, the Americans gave a return by the city in one of those convertible buses that are only taken in strange earth. The bad languages assure that they have come from tourism. If not outside by Djorkaeff and Donovan, it would be possible to be said that brightest of selection MLS it is in the bench. Steve Nicol, ex- of the mythical Liverpool of the 80, is the technician, helped by the Johnston Scot, a soccer player who caused a true religious argument when the Rangers (protestant) by the Celtic left (catholic). They will remember that trophy that threatened aplastarte.

Fulham vs. Real Madrid...are these teams comparable???? there are about 3 maybe 4 teams in the EPL that can compete with Real...the rest are kitty litter (including Fulham).

He's got it backward...neither penalty was deserved, but there should have been more than 5 minutes at the end. There were several injuries, extensive time wasting and a mini-brawl.
Point taken, though...the MLS referees still suck.

MLS Select arrived yesterday at different times and some players visited the Prado Museum but not, to their honor, (the restaurant chain) the Museum of Ham. (NOTE: this is a place that has pigs legs, jamon serrano cured in a style similar to Italian prosciutto, hanging everywhere. It smells. Badly. But they serve great jamon serrano.)
If it weren't for Djorkaeff and Donovan, one could say that the most illustrious figure is on the bench. Steve Nicol, formerly of the mythical Liverpool of the 80s, is the coach, assisted by the Scotsman Johnston, a player who sparked a major religious scandal when he left Rangers (protestants) for Celtic (Catholics).

Ok, so it's probably more like 99 out of a 100 times, but still, there's a chance :)

Since this is on FSC, then I would expect it to be rebroadcast two or three more times. The RM/LA Gals match was on a couple of times, too. Just check the listings, and try not to read anything with a [R] in the title until it shows up.
