Hi

I am working on a website about the football clubs of the world - their names and what they mean, histories, traditions and so on. Everything that makes each club unique.

Here is the section for Bayern Munich - http://www.albionroad.com/clubs_details.aspx?id=111

If you have a chance to check it out, I would appreciate any corrections, additions, suggestions, etc. Thanks!

Maybe someone on the board can correct me...but isn't the official name still "FC Bayern München e.V." (eingetragener Verein)?

Also, slight typo at the end..."FC FC" :D

2 corrections for your Germany section:
Most cups: Bayern Munich 12 (not 11)
and the bottom 3 are relegated, no playoff game with the 3rd best team from the 2nd Bundesliga (last time that was done was in 1991)

Whoops! Thanks.

Well, I just thought I'd mention it since the used to say FC BAYERN MÜNCHEN EV.

I agree with the rest of the folks on this thread though, nice site! I learned some stuff today perusing it. :)

At least it's not totally wrong, cos like I mentioned, that was done til 1991.

I think so too :)

If you need any more infos on german soccer, feel free to ask.

@E.V.
I don't think that you need that and btw. I'm not even sure, that Bayern still is a E.V. (means something like "registered club", not that important)

If you need any more infos on german soccer, feel free to ask. What about rivalries? The only ones I really know are the city derbies like Bayern-1860, Hamburg-St Pauli and others like Borussia Dortmund-Schalke, Werder-Hamburg I don't really know which teams are rivals with each other.

Without a doubt the biggest rivalry is Dortmund-Schalke, all the others are not that important. Mainly it's with teams from a small distance like Werder-HSV or from the same city like Bayern-1860, but those are not anywhere near real derbys like Rangers-Celtic or Boca-River Plate.

If I had to do a list with the current Bundesliga teams, I'd look like this:
Bayern: Nürnberg, 1860
Werder: HSV
HSV: Werder, St.Pauli (although in my opinion they are not good enough to qualify for a real rivalry)
Schalke: Dortmund
Köln: Mönchengladbach, Leverkusen
Hertha: No idea
Kaiserslautern: Mainz, Mannheim
Leverkusen: Köln
Hannover: Braunschweig
Wolfsburg: Braunschweig, Hannover
Dortmund: Schalke
Stuttgart: KSC, Freiburg
Duisburg: no idea
Mönchengladbach: Köln
Nürnberg: Bayern, Fürth
Mainz: Kaiserslautern
Bielefeld: no idea
Frankfurt: Offenbach, Darmstadt

Bayern München is still a e.V. (as Daniel said, this translates to registered club). But the soccer section of the club became a joint-stock company, which still belongs to the main club though. More on this in the thread about club owners on the UEFA and Europe board.

Oh, and in the case of FC Bayern Bayern means Bavaria, not Bavarians. Bayern without an article is the name of the state, die Bayern is the plural of der Bayer (Bavarian).

And while I am at it: Prussia isn't a "predecessor" to Germany. Prussia, although the biggest and most powerful, was one of 30 something German states.

Do you want to use the local name or the English name of the clubs in your club list, btw?

If it's their latter I would say change Köln into Cologne and Nürnberg into Nuremberg. If you want to go for the local names I would suggest to change
Bayern Munich into Bayern München, Hertha Berlin into Hertha BSC, Hannover into Hannover 96 and to add the club abbreviation to all "city only names".

Another one: Hermann IS (not was) the German name of Arminius. He did not call himself Hermann, this name was given to him centuries after his death.

"Borussia is the Latin word for Prussia, the largest and most powerful of the states that merged to create Germany in the 19th century."

Do you want to use the local name or the English name of the clubs in your club list, btw?I don't know, I can't decide what is the best way to do this. I'd like to list every club by their 'common name' which would be the name they are most popularly known as. But I haven't decided what that means...is it Bayern Munich or Bayern München, is it AC Milan or Milan, etc.

Any suggestions?

"Borussia is the Latin word for Prussia, the largest and most powerful of the Northern German states and the driving force behind the creation of the German Empire in the late 19th century."

I would word it this way. FYP, I guess ;).

"Northern German states" mainly because of Austria, btw.

The idea that there is only one Germany, as opposed to various German states, is much older, btw. During the 15th century the common name for Germany as a whole switched from "die deutschen Lande" (the German lands) to "Teutschland" (later Deutschland).

I would always use local names (www.rsssf.com is a good source, as they always use local names as well). I have never seen the name Hertha Berlin used in Germany, for example. Hertha, Hertha BSC or Hertha BSC Berlin yes, but never Hertha Berlin.
