That's not even an issue. Ben Arfa and Benzema won't start against Marseille. The big guns will be back for that game.

yes, it was a great match!

it was a curious experience for me because normally guignol jr. and i sit in the north end; since it was a midweek match we didn't plan on going. the father of one of my son's friends made a similar decision and one thing leading to another he ended up inviting me and i watched from a skybox. actually i prefer the virage, and above all prefer going with my son!

i disagree with SMSM about the quality of play from different individuals. for OL, diarra and cris were subpar in the first half. and wiltord was very good all through i felt. he made tiago's goal by recuperating a ball everyone expected to go out, and the OM defense was caught flatfooted. juni was also a bit flat and proved once and for all he has no aerial game.

i do agree that carew disappointed, déhu had his number.

about govou's goal: i read somewhere that carew had the most powerful shot in L1 (maybe it was in europe even), and at the end of practice you see him, wiltord and diarra taking power shots for about 5 minutes. it's generally hartock in goal, because frankly, it's dangerous!

sid doesn't seem to consider that sport, but his shot last night would stick with any of them. he could bring down a helicopter with that right foot!

finally, big agreement about françois clerc! MOTM! one big mistake but the rest was caviar!

for OM, ribery was good at the beginning, but after lamouchi's goal, OM went static, and that was the end of ribery, not enough movement for him to shake diarra and clerc.

cana did well in the back, but i think déhu (despite his gaffe) and bonissel (yes, believe it!) were better. maoulida and pagis were fine too, but just as for ribery, were not much help once OM fell back.

just what was fernandez thinking? that he can plant one against OL and fall back to hold on for 75 minutes? against rennes, against troyes or metz, maybe. but OM needed to try to kill the match, instead of saying "let's just hold on and win", which became "let's just hold on and tie", and finally "let's just hold on and lose"!

ramblings:

garibian officiated very well for 60 minutes, but lost control of the match completely by the end; his failure to see so many fouls on both sides got the players riled, and with cana's attack on juni, barthez time-wasting and diarra, fred and cris letting their tempers get the better of them, the match could had finished very badly.

wiltord, as i said, had a great match. but it was in stoppages time that he was the most impressive in a way; what a sly old fox! he ran the last three minutes out all by himself in the corner, getting throw in after throw in...

the most impressive thing for me last night? to see that OL plays the same way, with the same attitude, all the time now. whether ahead or behind, in the first 15 minutes or the last, against réal, OM or grenoble, with fred or carew, RVR or clerc, they just steamroll. awesome.

I just saw the highlights on OLweb.fr (by the way I love the new site, free highlights) The Marseille goal seemed to be caused by defending miscure by Cris, and I think Coupet could have saved that shot, right through his legs. Yes he was diving but I think Coupet is one of the best in the world, and he should of had it. Tiago's goal was nice, after Wiltord and Govou? did very well to win the ball off the touch line. Govou's goal was amazing, I didnt catch the Marseille defender who misplayed it but what a strike by Govou, almost left my computer screen shaking.

Wow, a 14 point lead at 21 games played...will anyone close in? Within 10 points even?

my fearless prognostication is that OL will finish more than 20 points ahead of the pack.

but at this point that's less fearless than what platoche said at the beginning of the season: http://www.sportinglife.com/football/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=international_feed/05/09/21/SOCCER_Fra-Lyon_Platini.html&TEAMHD=socce

Maybe Fred would better for Ligue 1 than Carew but I think the logic is that Carew will be needed more to win the CL since he has more physical presence. Fred is good though.

well, sl17vk's hopes came to nought, but ASNL has no reason to hang their heads. the difference between the two sides never seemed that big, the only factor that accounts for OL winning 2-0 was that alchemy of experience, confidence and opportunism that they call réalisme in french. as JMA said after the match, "this is not just any 3 points. not many teams are going to come here and win this year."

OL played without malouda, réveillère or juninho; flo is still getting back in shape after a nasty gastroenteritis, rvr still needs conditioning after his three week thigh muscle layoff, and juni's ankle is getting rest after cana's assassination attempt last week. nothing serious, and clerc, pedretti and benzema each getting another match under their belts, the first two honorably and the last a bit more than that, is all to the good.

I was very proud of the way my side played. We didn't look like relegation candidates. I'm really hoping that Correa can make Nancy into what Allardyce has done with Bolton in England. Similar size clubs similar budget limitations. One can certainly hope.

I said it before. I want Benzema to be called up to the national team to get some experience as a substitute so that he will be more prepared for the 2010 WC. I think he has great talent and that France should start grooming their players younger.
