Lyon is really proving their worth in the transfer market.....
6 Million Euro's for Carew???? Come on?
Tiago will be a steal at 10, and Fred for 12 (aka the next Ronaldinho) is another great buy. I still haven't given up on Pedretti at 7 yet either. That all adds up to 35 million. Has any other team in Europe spent that much (excluding Chelsea, which aren't for real anyways)???don't forget monsoreau! (5M€)

Pedretti didnt play Clement did and Tiago will take away Pedretti's playing time even more.

So they have spent 40 million euros on their recruitment so far.... 260 Million FF. When was the last time a team spent that much if ever???

So, according to the transfer markert :
Essien = Fred + Tiago + Carew + Pedretti + Monsoreau !
That's a good deal, I think

Its a good deal if Tiago is just as good as Essien and I dont know if he is. I would be much more satisfied if it were Baros instead of Fred. Pedretti and Monsoreau were signed strictly as cover in case anyone went down and they had to fill in for a while. Carew and Tiago were clearly the top signings. Fred is a risk and gamble.

Interesting. Fred has been a better scorer than Robinho, and his fellow Brazilians tend to think he is class.

Fred sounds like a verry good player,he and Carew could be class! But Tiago? Don´t think he got the skills to play for Lyon, the matches i saw him in last season he sucked big time!

Fred seems to have the very same ability of Ronaldo at the same point in his career. I dont think he's a gamble at all. I think this is another genius move by Lyon, just like Carew was.
read up on the new Brazilian phenomenon:

Fred is a risk and gamble.Comparatively, Fred is much more "ready" than Nilmar was when he was purchased. As such, he is less of a gamble than Nilmar's original acquisition. Plus, Lyon's recent forays directly from the Brasileiro have been fruitful enough to warrant the leeway on this one.
I do understand your argument that it is less risky to keep a player with potential that is already within your midst (Nilmar), than to bring in another player with potential who has to adapt to a new environment (Fred). However, on the basis of pure talent, Fred portends to be able to reach greater heights.
Either decision is defensible IMV.
PS _ I wouldn't classify Fred as a Ronaldinho type sl7vk. He's not a creative.

More like Ronaldo then?

More like Ronaldo then?Neither. Ronaldo, past and present, is a very unique type of player. Very few show up like him.
I think I posted before, but Fred reminds me of Careca. All around good abilities - nose for goal, can play either alone or in tandem, and can beat people when he needs to, passes well, heads well, and has a precise shot. Careca was a bit faster, but Fred is a bit stronger. Careca's movement was better, but Fred is young and will learn that.
I'm sorry that my description isn't the best, but if you remember Careca against Les Blues in '86...I think he can get to be that good.

How much playing time will Fred actually get. Their best lineup is 4-5-1 with Carew as the lone forward and Govou, Juninho, Malouda, Diarra, and Tiago in midfield. If Carew has to go out then Wiltord will come in. If they play a 4-4-2 maybe Fred will get some starts over Wiltord on occasion.

Like a brazilian i can say you that Fred has the potential to be the next Careca. He was "just" the best striker playing in Brazil, isn´t good for a 21 years player?

The transfer window closes in like 2 days and appeararntly Tottenham have put in a bid for Govou. This is troubling news. They cant afford to lose this guy especially not this late in the transfer window. If he wants to leave and go there then he is a fool.

So they have spent 40 million euros on their recruitment so far.... 260 Million FF. When was the last time a team spent that much if ever???actually i add it up as 45M€: monsoreau 5, pedretti 7, carew 8, tiago 10, fred 15.
but don't forget they've sold 39M€ worth (essien and bergougnoux). so total outlay has only been 6M€.
the envelope for this year was probably around 30M€. that was the figure kind of guessed at looking at last year's and this year's budgets. it is borne out by the fact they had already bought monsoreau and pedretti when they were trying to get trez or thomasson. when those fell through they were still on chamakh and toulalan, all that when essien was not for sale.
so there's still about 24M€ in the kitty. i guess that there's 6 to 10 for ged's xmas presents, and the rest goes under the mattress for next year.
