I'm toying w/ the idea of going to Oneonta to see Harkes inducted into the HOF and watch the match vs. the Rapids.

How do I get there?

I could drive (assuming about an 8-hour drive) but what's the closest airport from which I could drive? I don't want to get on a succession of small planes to get there.

Any ideas?

couple of thoughts.

You could fly Independence Air IAD-Albany $106.90 RT Flght 1571/1570 Depart: 0630-0745 Return: 2115-2235 with a 78 mile (mostly interstate) drive.

To fly into Binghamton, would cost $275 RT and you still have a 60 mile commute with a less favorable schedule.

According to mapquest, you should be able to do this in 6 hours from Laurel.

Good luck, have fun.

Nearest is probably Binghamton, then Albany and Syracuse after that.
Utica has an airport, but you'd be lucky to get a plane as big as a Dehaviland Otter.

here's a Yahoo map:

It used to take me about 7-8 hrs to drive up to Binghamton, from Springfield.

From Annapolis it should take you around 6 to 7 hours to drive. Flying to Binghamton is your best flying choice. It is around 30 to 40 minutes fron there to Oneonta. The best way to drive from here is to take 83 North to 81 North. That will take you past Scranton and straight into Binghamton. From there follow the directions on the HOF website. I will be driving to my parents house on Sunday, in Elmira (1 hour west of Binghamton). We will then set out for Oneonta the next morning. I will have one of the La Norte banners with me so I will be easy to find for anyone going.

Southwest flys to Albany.

If you're going to go, you should fly to NE and see the DCU-NE game on Sat then drive to Oneonta on Sun (I believe it's like 4 hrs from Boston) then you could fly home from Albany to BWI.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.

If I can fit this all in (and get my wife to agree) here's my agenda.

Fly to Providence on Sat. afternoon.
Rent a car. Something luxurious, like a Ford Focus.
Drive to Foxboro and watch NE-DCU
Drive to Oneonta on Sat night.
Play in the Hall of Fame golf tournament on Sunday AM.
Noodle around the rest of the day.
Go to the induction ceremony on Monday
Watch the DCU-COL match.
Drive to Albany (closest Southwest city) on Monday night.
Drop off luxurious ride.
Fly home.

Sounds like fun, no?

Oh you had me at Ford Focus! ;) If you decide to go, let me know as I might have someone for you to bring to the HOF.

We did a similar car trip in 2001, drove to Foxboro for the US-Jam WC clincher, then headed straight to Oneonta for the HOF ceremonies and game involving the Freedom. I'm in the 'drive it if you can' camp myself, though gas was probably cheaper back then.

Simple trick if you get lost. Roll down the windows and follow the scent of John Harkes' ego. Works like a charm.

I'm driving over from Syracuse to see the game. This is a really easy drive, but I believe is longer than from Albany or Binghampton.

There really is nothing to see in Oneonta other than the soccer HOF, which is great if you haven't been there. Be prepared to be amazed at how good the museum is. It has on display the world's oldest soccer ball!

If you have time take the ~30 minute drive to Cooperstown. Other than the Baseball Hall of fame, there are some really good breweries there. Definitely try the Belgian Beer at Brewery Ommegang, as well as the Cooperstown Brewing company.

See everybody there.

By the way, they're advertising this game in Syracuse with radio commecials. I found that pretty strange. How many people do they think are going to make the 2h drive down there? They give the number to call to buy tickets. My guess is if they're advertising this in Syracuse, they must also be doing so in Albany and Binghamton.

The commercials say, "come see Freddy Adu and MLS Champions DC United take on Joe Cannon and the Colorado Rapids." Is Freddy going to play in this game, or will he still be injured? I'd hate for people to actually make the trip to see Freddy, and then have him not even play.

I haven't heard anything about the rosters other than Harkes and Balboa. Do we know anything else?

OK, I'm all set. BWI-Providence-Oneonta-Albany-BWI.

Woohoo! Should be tons of fun, if a bit tiring. Hope golf game (at the Hall of Fame tournament) doesn't suffer too much.

Clint Eastwood's suggestion re: Cooperstown sounds great. I'll have Sunday afternoon free.

Pix when I return.

Take from someone who lives here, Albany is your best airport to get to unless you can charter a flight to Oneonta. A drive from Albany to here is about a little over an hour.

What to do in Oneonta? Not much, but a pub crawl is your best bet since there is no shortage of bars around here.

Sounds like I have chosen wisely, then. Thanks.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Thamlin19 again.

BTW this game is gonna be on FSC also so you can tape it for posterity.
