...to see if all the stuff Ive read in history books and seen on TV has any truth in it. Probably sounds stupid to you.
Oh it is true and the only part that is stupid about it is that there is still a fair amount of it going on. And I won't blame it all on the south. We've got them here in Illinois too.

I don't recommend you go looking for them either. I don't think that they like to be found and they sure don't really do things out in the open.

There is some truth to history, I wouldn't say that what has happened in the past is prevelant today. No nation has a spotless history, and there has been plently of progress. Also, like you say Matt, there are idiots all over the US, not just the south, as well as around the world.
As for the southern US in general, there is a lot of interesting history with lots of cultural influences. There are also plenty of good people.

What would people recommend for a tour of the Deep South? I would probably start in New Orlean, then head to the Casino's in Biloxi (anyone read Tishomingo Blues?), from there to Oxford, Missisipi and on to Memphis. Then maybe back down through 'Bama and finish up on the Florida panhandle. I think that pretty much covers the bases, Though South Carolina would be nice too.

It's hard for me to think of any truly historical trip to the south without going to Charleston and Ft. Sumter in South Carolina. Memphis would be an excellent choice as well if only for the civil rights museum.

true story... I currently live about 10-12 miles away from the Mason Dixon Line and 16 miles away from the town of Rising Sun, which is/was a hub of the KKK.
I live in Newark, DE, which is right on the border with Maryland, and just a short drive to what we call Rising Scum. A friend of mine used to be a Fed Ex driver, and he had a route there. He told me that there was a pharmacy that was on his route that used to display KKK recruitment posters on the wall/in the window. And this was in the mid-nineties. Pretty ********ing scary/pathetic.

There's also Nashville, the Hollywood of the south, and Branson, the south's Las Vegas

Think of London, a small city
It's dark, dark in the daytime
The people sleep, sleep in the daytime
If they want to, if they want to

Good idea Anti, let's all meet up with Rick in Branson. Rick, you can fly into St. Louis, Missouri and I will pick you up. It's only a 4 hour drive.

amen... I'm an hour's drive from bloody Philadelphia... I'm not in the South or even remotely close to it. Its a weird world and people can be idiots wherever they please. what makes it worth leaving the house is all the non-idiots out there that we come across.

Ok, Doug. I know you are an Illini fan but can you tell me how exactly it is over rated?
I know bigger isn't always better and I don't claim it to be the best but overrated? Using what as a measuring stick? That thing in the middle of a cow pasture in Champaign?
it's not loud, for starters, compared to other stadiums of similar size (Neyland Stadium).

That, I will agree with.
It's still not overrated though.

A really neat city for your Southern tour would be Memphis, for one, their is enough stuff to do to actually entertain you for more than a day. There is (in two weeks) gonna be a footie bar.
Its an easy drive from Arkansas, if you must see some of the old south.
We could drive down rural highways and listent to Johnny Cash.

I've been to Seattle...seen the stadium and it is nice. However, your "list" is just a bit outdated. Keep holding on to the past, Deep. keep on holdin....:D
Outdated? How.. I swear they haven't torn it down ;)

No seriously, if you're implying that the huskies suck then yes, they really really sucked last year.. First losing season in my life time. But the stadium is still what it is and still full every week.

no no...not implying they suck.
the list of "top stadiums" is outdated...not the huskies or the stadium.
I was so shocked that list had GT as the best football stadium in the ACC but then realized that they had tech listed in the Big East (of which they haven't been in for 2 seasons).
No insult meant, DL. I dig the Huskies! :p

Aww I see, some deeper southern pride thing.. yeah the list is from 2002 I think.. not that any of the stadiums have changed much ;)
Feel free to dis the huskies if you want.. I wasn't bothered just couldn't figure out what you were on about.. But we'll be back! (in 20 years!)
Looks like they've got Clemson first in the old ACC and GT second.
