best I've ever read on him. Please note that his agent says that a move to United is unlikely

Quashing the ManU rumors in there. That's probably for the best, Gooch needs to keep playing all season (and NOT get hurt, please!!).

Especially before the World Cup, he needs a place that he knows he will get playing time.

Man, too bad Marvell Wynne isn't getting a look tonight, can you imagine that backline.....This was certainly a concern of mine a year ago when I didn't know if we were gonna have anyone solid back there and now I think we are going to have our best backline in the history of the team within the next year or two.

Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves with Wynne. True, he has terrific upside, but he still has yet to play for a pro team , and he has much work to do, both tactically and technically. But aside from his athleticism, what I really like about Marvell is his competitiveness. I think he's mentally tough, and I think he'll learn quickly.

Yeah, good stuff. Always good to have a well-written article about a US soccer player from a well-known US publication.

I really like knowing that we could have a big, big guy on the backline. I love our team, but sometimes we look like mosquitoes out there.

Actually, having watched both Wynne and Gooch in WYC, I'd say that Wynne is far ahead of where Gooch was at that age. Yes, both were raw talents with tremendous physicality and upside, but Wynne had many more flashes of dominating a match. His speed and ability to get up and down the wing were things that you never saw from Gooch at the U19 level.
Obviously, Wynne could stop progressing and never reach his potential. However, if he goes overseas, I think he has a shot to get there. I also think that a big, strong, fast defender gets a longer look overseas than a smaller, skillful player (Convey, LD, etc). Coaches over there will be much more patient with Wynne! Overall, I do agree that we have a chance at a real big, fast worldclass backline in the next several years!

Great article.
Nice to see a first-generation kid get on with it instead of complaining about the American style of play and the discriminating system.
That article should be translated into Spanish and distributed to Spanish-language sports pages across the country.

That was a great article! It's always nice to see a personal story about a US soccer player! I already wrote usa today to keep the stories coming about us soccer players.

Easy Big fella. My stereotyping alarm just sounded.
I hope everyone takes a second to send an email to USAToday; I did. We need more accurate fluff pieces like this one. OK maybe not fluff but accuracy is appreciated, as well as the shout out to HU.

At 6'4" and 210 lbs... if you're going to need a more powerful champion to fight for you... that's about the size of it.
