Good video about the day at ESPN. Did you notice Donovan's shirt? I think he was sending a message to BigSoccer posters. :D

The message: "I've been shopping at Target."

My God. They hate soccer. Did you see the people sneering at them? And telling them soccer sucks? And making fun of them? And giving them no publicity at all?
Baby steps. Baby steps.

Ever think that maybe some, just some, of these baby steps are also partially the result of them getting feedback when their commentators did/do sneer at soccer?

Not really. I think it all has to do with the success in the 2002 Cup and money. I was never one who cared about that stuff. They make fun of all kinds of things and people complain, yet that doesn't change things.
It's all about the green.

No. It has a lot more to do with the fact that soccer is getting more popular and that the USMNT soccer team is getting better.
People who send whiny e-mails and/or letters to ESPN (or newspapers, tv stations, radio stations, etc) complaining about soccer coverage make soccer fans look like idiots.

But you guys keep pointing out that ratings for MNT and MLS games are still cr@p. If that's true - and I believe it is - where are all these greenbacks coming from then???
I'm sure you're right, complaining never changes anything...that's why there's this saying about squeaky wheels and grease. Ever think that complaints reflect interest and interest reflects a potential revenue stream? Ever think that a corporation might take potential future revenue sources into account when making decisions about what to do?

And this huge upswing in popularity is being reflected where exactly???
Some people think that the ultimate bitch is one that just lies back and takes whatever the world dump on them.

Feel free to keep sending e-mails and letters complaining about coverage.
Personally, I'm thankful for ANY soccer broadcasts I can see at home. Then again, I remember trying to keep track of the US team during the qualfication process for the 1990 World Cup. It was next to impossible.

Sponsorships. adidas ponying up a lot of money for MLS and Nike putting more effort into the MNT to counteract that.
Plus, when the SUM/World Cup deal was announced, ABC/ESPN said that the Germany World Cup was more important to them than the Japan/Korea one, from a financial standpoint.
Well, they made some decent coin in 2002 and set ratings records. This is a great time - since the broadcast plans will be announced today - to put some muscle behind the effort to make sure they make a lot of money.

I think Nike's muscle, ESPN's desire to make a profit and the timing of the WC broadcast plans has waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more to do than e-mails from irate soccer fans.

Speak your mind, but understand where that falls in the void. I often contact people in the media with my thoughts about soccer coverage. I just think ESPn is a lost cause in that regard. National media like that is driven by sponsorship.

while I tend not to agree entirely with your views on the media being faultless, you are right on the money with this one.
I would say, however, that the complaint e-mails do serve some purpose- albeit a much smaller one.
Like the posters here have been saying, they serve as reminders to "Bristol" that we soccer fans are out there and are not going to sit back and simply accept what's "given to us"...
(cue swelling music) We're trying to make a better life for ourselves and those socccer fans that come long after we're gone!! We're telling them that though they may not like soccer inside those four walls, we do!! WE out here... on the outside... in the corners of the earth where the light of the "Baseball Tonight" studio do not shine... we like soccer!!
And we say to the likes of the Chris Bermans and the Trey Wingos...DO NOT TREAD ON ME!!!
(music fades)
