I hope there is no ESPN classic.

Since such a small percentage of world viewers have HD and the world cup is done by a "world feed", that's a good guestion.. I doubt it will be at full HD lines if it is shown here in HD though..
I guess we will know tomorrow..

That would be so cool. Hopefully, my cable company will be carrying ESPN2HD by then.

HDTV technical standard will be HD-SDI 1080i / 50, a worldwide compatible standard. :)

I suspect some of the coverage will be available in HD.
The other issue is that ESPN didn't have the rights to both the French Open and Wimbledon in 2002, plus they also have most of the coverage of the first two rounds of the US Open golf championship. And this is a World Cup where some of the games will conflict with the aforementioned programming.
I'm guessing about 16-20 games on ESPN 2, 6 on ABC, the rest on ESPN Classic (to cover conflicts). The USMNT game coverage would depend on what group they're put in and when those games are scheduled, since I doubt ABC would carry any weekday games.

Here's the press release.
The announcement is that all 64 games will be shown live in high definition between ESPN, ESPN 2 and ABC. The HD coverage includes the studio content- pre, half-time, and postgame segments. As in the recent past, play will be shown commercial-free.

Commercial-free, thank god. Now let's just hope they don't interpret "commercial-free" to mean "commercial break free" and sneak in the split screen...

Well, I guess we've got a year to bombard all the major cable companies (TWC, Cox, Comcast) to get them to add ESPN2-HD.
I'm sending my request right now. (Still pissed that the US game tonight is in HD and I have to watch it on regular crappy cable).

All in HD? I'm absolutely giddy. ESPN2-HD hits DirecTV in September for College Football Season. Helluva announcement.

You don't actually expect them to know about 1930 World Cup, do you? Besides, even w/ U.S. making the semis in 1930, I think you can say that 2002 World Cup was the best ever performance by U.S. Nats iin a World Cup.

Give 'em time. Pretty soon we'll be hearing how ESPN HD is extra $ and how that's all part of a master plan to run the sport into the ground.

All games in HD - GREAT NEWS!!!
Good call on starting now with the ESPN2HD requests. I will email Comcast now. But I think here in Dallas that Comcast had a deal with Time-Warner and Time-Warner will be taking over the Dallas Cable system by the end of the year. I know....I will just email both of them :D
Is there any news about when any of the cable systems will starting carrying ESPN2-HD? ....is Da_Cfo still around?
