Ahhh, the U-Haul is gone and CityIceMan has settled in at the Essen Haus. Now if only The Highbury would invest in a few boots the meetings would really get rolling.

I was just over in Germany, Siegen, to precise and SportsFruende Siegen, newly promoted to the second division is sponsored by Krombacher. So guess what? Cousin Bernd "The Hammer" (former left back for SF Siegen 40 years ago) and I took a tour of the local taverns and showed our support by raising a Krombacher or two, or more. Bernd, afraid that we may not have Krombacher in Milwaukee, sent me home with six bottles, two of which met a sad end in London's Paddington station. Four made it home, two have been served with a fine meal and the final two are resting peacefully in the downstairs fridge.
As I've looked around this past week nary a Krombacher can be found. The Bavarian Inn may have it on tap but I cannot find any to bring home. So, if anyone can help me support the fellas over at SF Siegen but pointing the way to a few Krombacher Pils I would be indebted to you. Prost, Zum Wohl and a thwack of the boot.

I don't think Discount even has it, I called but will double check. At this point I'm hoping someone at the Bavarian Inn can point me in the right direction or maybe the guy over at The Palm might have some ideas.

Interestingly enough, Madison's own Nick Van Sicklen had a tryout with SportsFruende Siegen just before last year's MLS draft.

According to the Krombacher website, the brewery doesn't have a USA importer (it's in Canada and Mexico, however).
As you probably know, the German beer market is far less consolidated than in the US, with the top 30 breweries (Warsteiner being the largest; there are over 1,200 German breweries) having 75% of the market share, while in the States, the Big Three have an even larger market share (and we have 1,500 breweries). Krombacher is a "big" German brewery (in one list, I see it as being second to Warsteiner), but it's overall market share is probably pretty tiny. Enjoy those last two bottles.
Funny, but as much as I like a good German pilsner, they're pretty much a taste-alike lot to me. Seek out a Victory Brewing Prima Pils and see what a great pilsner (from PA) tastes like. And I won't tell my wife's Uncle Bernd in Berlin (who swears that Warsteiner is the best beer on Earth) if you won't tell your Cousin Bernd in Siegen. It'll be our little secret.

Allright, I get your point, I appreciate the research, it's exceedingly conclusive, it has left me depressed, but I remain undaunted. Maybe a drive to Chicago is in order, they've gotta have it there. And, while I will go ahead and take up the recommendation, just because you twisted my arm, and give the Prima Pils a try, I gotta get the Krombacher.
Cousin Bernd "The Hammer" was born in Krombach and it's going to mess up my whole family Christmas Picture motif if we've got the SF Siegen wool hat, the SF Siegen jersey (with KROMBACHER across the front), the SF Siegen key-chain and we're standing there holding anything other than Krombachers.
I'm counting on the Essen Haus or Bavarian Inn to give me a lead.

For some reason (financial, scared?) they decided to do an exhibition season. So the Wave United is the outdoor team, but they're not a part of any league this year.

The game is scheduled a couple of days after the meeting between Garber and MPS chiefs. A good opportunity to test how you Milwaukee people would face in front of an mls side. Add th fact that this against Chicago is a sort of derby for you, isn't it?
Which is the capacity of the stadium? Any predictions about the attendance? I remember the wave didn't get so much ...

The stadium at Uihlein can probably hold 5,500 fans or so, if enough people are packed in.
When the Fire last played up here, in August, 2003 for a USOC game, there were 4,100 people that attended a game that was delayed by weather for 45 minutes.

From everything that I had read, they didn't play in the USL this year because there was too much of an overlap between the two seasonons (indoor and out). That not only didn't their team have time to properly prepare, they also didn't have time to sell tickets and sponsorship. I'm sure that costs also came into play.
Moving forward I would guess that there would be some cooperation between the Wave and the purposed MLS group. Between their own season ticket and camper list, that's a lot of potential season ticket holders to direct market to.

Anyone know what USP's rules on flags and more specifically flagpoles are?
olderandwiser
22 Aug 2005, 03:41 PM
I don't think they've ever had to deal with flags or flagpoles (they might tell you no if the end is whittled to a fine point, though). Seriously, I can only recall the Minnesota Thunder coming in with this kind of equipment, and don't believe any of it was stopped at the gate. If a large crowd is expected on September 10, they may create a rule that night to confiscate any poles or have you return it to your vehicle. The only stated no-no's I've seen printed by USP are no dogs and no carry-ins.
