What's the story as to how this became an unofficial anthem of sorts?

I wanna know too.
I've heard the song being used in the background of the "Rafalution" videos on ESeason ticket, and I don't get it either.
When AC Milan played the Chicago Fire in a friendly. The PA played the Johnny Cash version of Ring of Fire as a tribute to Chicago, and the veteran players (Klopas & Nowak) honored. It occured to me that Milan might have thought that it was some type of windup.

LMAO. That's what i was thinking too. . of course i wore a Liverpool Champs of Europe tshirt for extra affect. :D oh. . .the stares.

ROF's roots in Liverpool lore appear to be hotly contested and debated. I couldnt get a straight answer on any of the fan sites.

The first time I heard it at the match was just after half-time at Craven Cottage last season, with Liverpool 2-0 down... As we were jumping about to it, the Reds pulled a goal back and went on to win the match 4-2 with a wonderfully classy performance from Xabi Alonso. I am told that someone had a Jonny Cash tape that they put on on the coach down to Fulham and so it took off.

It's definitely very new. You still get people laughing in recognition of it when it starts up at the ground. I first heard it in Istanbul.
