Why doesn't Bruce call him up. He is on a hot streak with DC. The national team could really use someone who has his kind of attitude, especially for the Mexico game. I can't stand the guy as a Crew fan but think he could definitely add something to team. I would envision him being used at the end of a game to shut the other team done with his physical play. And if he breaks Blanco's leg, well even better.

He has no green card?
He has played with the Ukranian Nat team at any level?
and as for the wants to only play for Ukraine bs. Several tempting items :
Frankie Hejduk;s water bong
Edson Buddle's kegerator
A suitcase full of cash from Chuck Blazer's "discretaionary slush fund"
Three words : Heather Mitts Kovalenko
Chance to take out GWB's knee at White House ceremony upon winning WC2006
I mean c'mon : a midfield of Ronnie O'Brien and Dema Kovalenko. How great would that be. Then we could stick Reyna at RB and JOB At LB and start motering towards the WC title. Oh yeah, Michael Ricketts up front too
Fantastico.

Not that I am in favor of him playing with the USMNT, but he was never called up....ever? For some strange reason I thought after he got his green card he got called into a camp/got a look. I must be on crack?

Green cards don't get you a look in camp. You have to be a citizen. All he has is a green card.
And yes, Dema will get a callup when O'brien does.

There's a December, 2003 Sky Sports story (http://skysports.planetfootball.com/article.asp?id=178464&cpid=219) that has him "spurning" a shot at US citizenship to play for Ukraine.
Guess he neither got a US citizenship nor got called up by Ukraine.

Actually, both Pablo and Cunningham were in camps with their green cards so as not to wait for the citizenship process to run its course, IIRC.

At least they were pursuing citizenship, which isn't the case with Kovalenko and O'Brien.

I can see a defense consisting of Dema and Joey Franchino. If an attacker gets by one, the other will kill him. Makes me think of:

Maybe Ben Olsen as the third defender?

And Freddy played with the U-17s for a year before his citizenzhip came through.

Don't make up lies. Ah, that classic Segroves sarcastic humor. Another masterpiece, Mike!

I think you can make the case that Kovalenko is one of the best midfielders in the league, and one of the biggest reasons for DCU's success last year and this year.
Unfortunately, he's not a citizen.

I've probably seen as many DC United games as anyone not actually affiliated with the team over the last season and a half.
Dema has definitely been a very good player for DC United.
I would not, however, want him on the USMNT.
