54 points, 8th place. And yet I have the feeling I'm overly optimistic.

By all rights I should feel down about our chances this year but I don't. We wont have a European competition to tax our small squad and I believe that our mid field is improved with Emre and Parker. Bramble and Boumsong look great together and we have young Taylor and Ramage to provide cover in addition to Craig Moore. We have some young attacking mid-fielders that might surprise us with thier goal scoring abilites and if we can just pick up a few more players I think will be fine. Don't forget Big Al wont let the boys slack off for a bit.

I should have prefaced my statement with the notion that I am going with the players we have, not assuming any more transfers, which we had damn well better at least get one striker and a left-back. If Owen and Coco come through, however, that could add up to 10 more points I'd think, which could slot the Toon anywhere from 4th to 7th (I did that blasted BBC predictor and NUFC finished 8th by a point  ). At least they'd push back through the front-door into Europe, no more of this Intertoto crap.

Top-six finish," he answered when asked his target for the season. "We've spent £50million since January, we couldn't back the manager any more.
"Graeme has got his own team now, 10 men in and 10 men out."
Shepherd has refused to reveal any possible clauses in Owen's four-year contract, with suggestions the striker could leave the club at the end of the season if he is not guaranteed European competition.
"He could be here for 10 years," Shepherd told BBC Radio Five Live.
"Alan's been here for nine years and Michael could be here for nine years too.
"We're happy with the contract and so is Michael."
Shepherd added his views to the debate of Sven-Goran Eriksson's role as England manager following the defeat to Northern Ireland in midweek.
"I'm very pro-British and I would want a British manager in the job, that is my opinion," he added. "But I think he (Eriksson) should stick it out."
I think that's realistic goal.

I never saw this thread. I'm sticking with my relegation prediction. 18th but ahead of last place Sunderland. And Given to Arsenal in January.
Thx,
Jay!
