FERGIE GETS A BRAZILIAN

MANCHESTER UNITED are set to capture Brazilian sensation Cicinho after the defender flew into the country for talks last night.

The 25-year-old right-back was the discovery of Brazil's Confederations Cup-winning side in June.

Both AC Milan and Juventus had been tracking the South American, who has a release clause of just under £8million in his contract at Sao Paulo.

But last night it appeared the defender was heading towards Old Trafford after he jetted into Manchester on a private plane for talks with United.

Signing the full-back would be

a huge coup for boss Sir Alex Ferguson as he looks to haul United back into championship contention after they finished 18 points behind Chelsea last term.

It would also be proof that the Glazer family is willing to fund Fergie heavily in the transfer market.

Cicinho, full name Cicero Joao De Cezare, had been earmarked by Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira to take over from ageing skipper Cafu next summer and Milan and Juventus were convinced they were in a two-way fight for his services.

Cicinho flew to Italy last weekend seeking to find proof that his grandfather was Italian, meaning he would qualify automatically for a European Union passport. That search is believed to have been successful, meaning that he will be able to sign for any club without the need for a work permit.

Milan and Juve believe they have been outfoxed by United, who are willing to offer more cash and a four-year deal to get their man.

Talks are expected to continue today and United are hopeful he could become their third major signing of the summer after the arrivals of Edwin Van der Sar and Korean Park Ji-Sung.

Cicinho's arrival will put a question mark over Gary Neville's automatic place in the United team, although the England right-back can also fill in at the heart of the back-line.

All good news. Glad to see we can still compete with Juve and Milan in the TM.

Having said that, shouldn't this be in the Transfer Thread?

Interesting, but being in The Mirror makes it hard for me to really believe right now. If it happens, it would be nice to have solid cover for Gary though.

Two phrases that don't quite jive "sensation" and "fund heavily."

That was a wonderful compilation. Why doesn't someone put Ronaldo's trickery to "The Killers"?

I hope Gary Neville isn' a paranoid, conspiracy theorist. I mean we know he speaks like a manager. But first they sell his brother, now Man Utd is in the process of bringing in a younger, faster, more flamboyant guy who does the same job and Even speaks Portugese!

well from what i've heard of this guy is that he's the brazilian version of heinze who plays on the right flank, which would be awsome. bring in pique in a couple of seasons and we'll be laughing.

That's funny, most of the people who have seen him play say he's all offence and no defence, Heinze is all defence and some offence. He sounds more like a Roberto Carlos type "defender" to me....

Cicinho is a hard working exciting player. I think he would actually help ManChester United.

Plus They would be even more exciting to watch. And Finally ROnaldo would have a friend to talk to in that wonderfull language we call Portugues!!

He is a quality player, but there are some things about Cicinho that worry me. First of all, can he defend very well? Not just well, but very well - as in enough to push Gary for his spot? If not, I don't want him - put the money towards a CB or CM and let's stick with Gary & Wes (who was extremely impressive at RB last season) while we wait for Rincon or somebody else. Also, why get another RB when we have the best on in the league, who isn't exactly dying of old age (he is 29, iirc)? If we put this money into Andrade or Chivu instead, it would make much more sense, as Brown (and I think Park) could fill in if Gary were to be missing.

I'm guessing it's paper talk; I just don't understand this purchase.

Really the only thing I can think of is if Gary has been showing some greatness in centrehalf as well as RB, enough so to put off buying a CB in favor of a new RB?

Cicinho is definitely more fo a right-mid in some ways than a right-back. He is very offensive-minded and not really a Heinze on the right. Think Cafu only less defensive experience in protecting that position.

Well, for what its worth, and it cant be worth much, coming from me, I'd have had you as a ManU scout and we'd never have seen the DjDj's and Liam Miller's of this world.

That's my worry - players like that tend to fit in well in some European leagues (e.g. La Liga), but tend to fall by the waistside in England. Plus Man United's fullbacks have usually been defensive rather than offensive (Irwin got forward at times, but always had his wing covered).

i actually think that cicinho would be a great fit under the assumption that the 4-3-3 is our permanent formation. he would provide great width with heinze, moreso than neville anyway. width is what this formation lacks and wingbacks are usually the ones to provide it. lets face it, neville is hardly a wingback with the engine to run up and down for 90 minutes. as great as neville's been for us, with the 4-4-2 gone, cicinho is a better fit for our new team and would displace him very soon imo. and at the confeds he didnt seem to be lacking as a defender either.
