Thierry Henry can claim the most goals for a single Premiership club this weekend, with the current holder having a ringside seat for the occasion.

Shearer holds the record with 138 for Newcastle.
Henry is currently sitting on 137 for Arsenal.

I wouldn't bet against him doing it, the barcodes defence doesn't look up to much.

If he breaks the record or equals it, will they stop the match and give him the match ball, etc. like they do in some sports like baseball or American football? Just wondering how it will be acknowledged if he breaks the record.

There's no way they'll stop the match. They may well announce it and/or put something up on the big screens and they'll probably have something in the programme about the possibility of him breaking the record.

As soon as I typed that I realized how stupid it sounded-no way to stop a footie match like the other sports I mentioned........ thanks for not telling me that I asked a stupid question like some others would have noted! ;)

I would not bet against Henry this weekend either! :D

I don't think it sounded stupid at all. When athletes break significant records, i think it's ok to stop the game for few minutes and give respect to that athlete. Like in McGwire's case, Bonds, Gretzky, Smith. I know some may think it's crazy, but it's definitely not stupid.

Considering Shearer is still going I doubt they'd stop it or even make a great big deal about it... if the current recordholder were retired, they may make a big deal, but considering AS could rebreak the record the next weekend, it seems pointless.

LOL...love the barcodes comment. Henry will shatter this record with him once again having to carry the bulk of the scoring load for Arsenal. Also Alan Shearer is on the way to managing after this season, isn't he? I have read tons of speculation about him working with Graeme or taking over for him.

Makes sense. I was just talking about in general.

Not a stupid question at all. To the extent the match stops for a few seconds anytime a goal is scored....it seems like they could give him the ball rather easily without disrupting play. Not saying they would do this....but it wouldn't seem to be a problem.

Well, if they throw the ball to Henry and it passes within, say 10 feet of Pires, then they WILL have to stop the game for awhile for the physios to check out Pires and make sure he's ok.

Hmm, well it's a pretty obscure and not all to meaningful record being that the Premier League is only in it's 14th season. But if it was most goals for a single top division club...

:DOoooo, get you bitch. Rooney, Van Nistelrooy and He Who Will Not Be Named are all similarly "vertically challenged". people in glass houses....

Also Alan Shearer is on the way to managing after this season, isn't he? I have read tons of speculation about him working with Graeme or taking over for him.I can definitely see him being manager there sooner rather than later. Souness' major ability seems to be the ability to piss people off. There might be nothing left to manage by the time Big Al's ready.

What? We can't call it the EPL? You don't like it? Does that mean we have to stop RvP, DB10, AC3, etc.? ;) :D

PS I have only used EPL once and it is in this post! :p

That's twice! :p

I actually find myself using it occasionally, but it's wrong. For an English lad (37 yrs young haha) there is only one premiership...

I suppose it's OK for those in the US to use it as it is marketed there as the English Premeeeeer League.

So if one were to say that "(The player who gets Rick riled more than any other and must not be named) plays in the (3 letter shorthand for the League in which the player Rick hates recently secured his participation in via transfer)", that person would be ceremoniously hung, drawn, and quartered?

Or would your head just explode before you had a chance to issue said punishment? :D
