The transfer of Uruguayan international goalkeeper Sebastien Viera to Arsenal has collapsed after the player reportedly failed a rigorous medical.

Now, this is what we get for leaving it till late........... !!!

"Wenger is now very short of time to recruit an able deputy for the erratic German keeper, which means that inexperienced 18-year-old Mark Howard or 17-year-old Vito Mannone may be pressed into action for those two high-profile Champions League games. "

Am I the only one getting frustrated with our "Take our time" attitude towards key transfers ????????????????????????????????????????? :(

Read first sentance

"Henry has two years remaining on his present deal at Highbury and the club are anxious to secure the striker's long-term injury." :D

So heartless :D

Arrg, I still remember the last time a player didn't come because of the medical, and it's Trabelsi who has turned out to be a hit. Why would having a goalkeeper pass a medical be so important anyway? He'll just be standing in between the goalpost. I hope we do not again miss out on a good player for such reasons..........

How the hell did he fail the medical? This transfer talk has been going on for awhile and he should have been studying the entire time! ;)

Really though, I wonder why he didn't pass. Unless there is something significantly wrong with him, why not sign him and work it out. Seemed like he was actually a good prospect between the posts. Time to start looking again. I'd also like to see some more depth in the back line.

For a good example of why a keeper needs to pass a medical to prove he's not going to be injury prone please look under : Kirkland, Chris

As both a keeper and defender, I can tell you that fitness and training are the opposite for keepers and outfield players. Keeper training is much more rigourous during the week, while matches are not as straining physically, where as matchadays are the big work days for outfield players. I am not saying that outfield training is easy at all, they are just two different positions that are looked at differently in terms of fitness. So, I think that is why passing the medical for any keeper is so important. Anyone agree?

Besides, the medical will look at every aspect of the player, strengths and weaknesses in all mscles, joints, etc. It could be something random like weak ligament in the knee that would make a team not want to make the investment.

Could a medical turn up something that could cause controversy later on, such as a banned substance?

It is possible that Viera was just out of shape. He has never looked like the most fit keeper to me. Even the early press on him pointed out that he was anything but athletic. Calling him fat is a bit much but he was certainly...um, well fed. Plus he is tiny which couldn't have helped. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a general lack of fitness and physical prowess rather than a specific injury, weakness, or banned substance. With Wenger wanting someone ready for the first CL games, he may have decided that Viera just couldn't get into match shape in time or couldn't cut it at Arsenal's level.

I'm with you. None of us have any idea what the club's attitude toward transfers is like because we aren't involved in the process. You can infer whatever you please from what little information is available, but there's no way of knowing if those inferences are accurate.

However, I would like to know why we were after a short fat keeper. That seems like a bad idea no matter how you slice it.

Why on Earth did AW let our 2 young English GKs go then? grrrrrr.
Almunia is our key backup as of right now...just got a chill up my spine.

Perhaps.

Someone mentioned knees, but for keepers the big problems tend to be with shoulders and/or hands, wrists. With the constant diving, this is where the injuries often show up. Damage can be cumulative and can lead to things like arthritis.

For a Second I thought we got a Vieira back. I really hope Patrick pulls a Jonathan Woodgate at Juventus.

I'm in total agreement with you on that. I would never wish something bad on PV4. Just because he left, doesn't erase all that he did for Arsenal. Neo, that had better have been a poorly worded joke.

Jesus facking tits. . .

This is just perfect. PERFECT!

What's next, Hleb tearing his ACL?

(Sorry in advance for writing that. It won't happen. It can't happen. Right?)

Although if it does, you can blame me. Hell, I'll blame myself.

Come on you Wenger, DO SOMETHING!!!! This makes Jenas seem even more desireable now, although that might be just b/c Sp*rs are involved. . .

And how the hell can Vinny Testaverde be cleared to play quarterback in the NFL, yet a 19 or 20 year old (whatever his age, young at least) with all of his appendages intact, cannot pass a flippin' physical? What, the "turn your head and cough" bit was too much for him?

Yeah, I know. . . it doesn't make sense really, but I was thinking along the lines of "lose a transfer, add a transfer". Obviously wouldn't cure our keeping or defense woes, but we gotta add something now. Even if it is another freakin' teenager.
