So who's following the CPIs and the political crisis that followed the 'mensalão' scandal? It's the biggest issue in Brazil these days. How do you think it's gonna end? Did Lula know? Roberto Jefferson: hero or villain? Can't wait for the next duel against José Dirceu.

É a vida.

I've been trying to follow this as much as I can through the English media, but I'd be curious - what do people in Brazil think? I don't know enough about all the players to form a well educated opinion, I'm afraid, although it seems like the Economist runs a story about this scandal every week. :D

Em pizza :mad:Funny - my wife used the very same expression the other night after watching another installment of Jornal Nacional, prompting me to ask and learn what it meant! :D

Personally, I'd like to see what a $100,000 cueca looks like.

And no, I don't think Lula knew what was going on, any more than Clinton didn't know he was having sex.

You want information or just opinions? The story is too complicated and ramified for me to explain in portuguese, let alone in another language. But it envolves illicity in governement contracts, some monthly payment ('mensalão') of opposition congressmen to vote with the government, the use of not declared resources to fund political campaigns, and a left party that always took proud of being corruption-free sunk in the biggest corruption scandal since the one who led to Collor's impeachment in 1992. The difference now is that the President has not been envolved in the schemes. So far.

Perhaps neovox who is a journalist and is a better writter can explain it better. :)

Opinions, really. I understand the general accusations, I think. The Economist does a really good job of explaining this stuff, actually. As I understand it, some of Lula's "henchmen" have been using government funds to pay subsidies to certain politicians to obtain favorable votes.

I think the armed forces should turn Brasilia into a prison and be done with it!

Lol,agreed.

IMO this time...pizza is out.I think,PSDB and PFL now have a chance to destroy thier most powerful rival,so I think they'll try anything to put a end at Lula and PT history.

Thanks. :)

There is still too much to be revealed, substantial facts that are not publicly known... But it is only a matter of time.

Last Friday Lula was on TV 'tryin ' to explain" and sayin ' he had nothing to do with this" and he feels betrayed ' because "he would never imagine that was going on " ( yep, sure... )
But on the cover of a famous magazine this week, one of the involved said president did know but didn´t do anything to stop it.

Did I mention in Brasil we have to vote for president next year?
Are you going to vote ? Neither am i

Marcos Valério will be in jail for couple months and then die after some years.
Bob Jeff ( LOOOOOL) will not be able to be elected for some years and then have a come-back, like always.
Karina will pose nude for Sexy or that one .. Brasil something, I forgot!

As for the others, it depends on what kind of pizza they like

I thought that it was required that you have to vote. (requesting clarification...)

There are no angels or heroes in this story. Jefferson just told about the mensalão because he stopped receiving it.

About the question about Lula knowing about it all or not, what is worse? Having a stupid president or a corrupt one? IMo of course Lula knew about, otherwise he would have already said the exact names of who betrayed him, but he didnt.

And Duda Mendonça is not less guilty than Marcos Valério in the campaign payment issue. Just wait and see, the justice will start opening his accounts in other countries.

Impagável! (http://www.estadao.com.br/nacional/noticias/2005/out/25/167.htm)

Chega dessa gente no comando do país.

Em tempo: votei no Lula nos dois turnos. Mas CHEGA!
