I know that they often practice a full week and they usually have 2 practices a day. The first one in the morning; it could be mostly a running/stamina/agility program. The second one is for the ball work and vice versa. Plus there's also a gym workout.

Italian professional teams spend 6 weeks in the Alps during the summer. To sharpen their aerobic base, increase lactate threshold, speed endurance, etc....as part of a systematic CONDITIONING program.

That is the latest from the Inter Milan camp. Their website always has the latest training photos and right now they are during preseason training, so I recommend you check into their site regularly. You can even catch a peek at Figo working out with the team for the first time.

If no one else here is going to jump in with first hand experience, I will I guess. I played six years at the semi pro level, and part of a year in 2nd division pro. We do the same things your team does, we practiced footskills basics as part of our warmup, played lots of keep away games, shot on goal in realistic high pressure games such as 4v4 with keepers on a 25 x40 yard field. The most intense games we played were when I was in Miliwaukee. Our coach had us play 9v9 small goals inside the penalty area with a size 3 ball. We started out with a two touch limit, but after about 10 minutes he made us play everything one touch...... I can still tell you 7 or 8 years later that it was the hardest thing mentally and physically I have ever done with a soccer ball.

We also played an obscene amount of 1v1 and 2v2 keep away, timed at 3 minutes usually and confined to a 10x10 yard square. Play five or six rounds of that as a technical warm up and I guarantee that everyone will be gasping for air.

Other than that, we did a lot of classroom work, studied game film to correct tactical errors, and spent a lot of time working on mental accuity, the ability to make faster and better descisions. In my experience, fitness was almost always trained for with a ball involved, other than the dreaded ladders, rings, and plyometric boxes.... if I never see another waist high jump box the rest of my life I would be happy.....

But I digress, if you want to train like a pro, you need to take a professional attitude about everything you do. From the warmup to the cool down you need to be looking to push yourself far enough to be uncomfortable. When you think you have reached a level of play that will suffice, you must push again, never happy with anything less than perfection. The life of a pro player is not the fun loving day in the sun that so many think it is, past a certain level it becomes an overiding obsession to prove to yourself that you are better than what you were yesterday.

But yes, European, I am guessing you are asking because you want to start seriously training like the PROS. I agree with the above poster about the fact that you have to have a professional mindstate if you want to get more results and be more serious about your training.

Today I trained. The reason I directed you to that website is because you can spot some of the pro team training systems. I used some of the effective training techniques today, plyometrics (foot and body work that works your fast twitch muscle fibers and maintains speed, reaction, and agility.) There are also books you can pickup if you would like. I would like to see one of the head athletic trainers from a world class club right a book about training methods.

I would agree with this statement. A person that TRULY trains very hard will get addicted to the feeling of strain and you don't want to stop. It's like when you are doing your jogging and you get a runner's high, you can't stop because it hurts so bad, but at the same time it feels good.

I played in Dayton, Miliwaukee, and Indianapolis....nothing glamourous I promise you, but my second acl tear ended it early at age 26. 6 Years later I gotta tell you that as "unglamourous" as it was....... I really really miss it. Don't pass up a single opportunity to chase your dreams - ever. It was the best 6 years of my life.

Just realized that I missed two thirds of your post while reminicing about my career!

Most pro teams I was around and those that my friends have played for have two training sessions a day. One is based around fittness....not neccesarily plyometrics and hard sprinting mind you, but general stretching, taking care of injuries, therapy, and a lot of the functional physical training meant to improve one's performance athletically, while also building joint strength for injury prevention. Most of these training sessions lasted 2 to 3 hours, with the assistant coaching staff and guest speakers always having a reserved period at the end for discussions, film study, assesments of training/games, introduction of new material/new players/new tactics/new set plays....come to think of it, we did a LOT of our set play stuff at the end of morning sessions.

The evening session, (at least for me it was always evenings), consisted of the more rigorous workouts and technical/tactical games and exercises.

As for game day, we had a light warmup about 90 min to 2 hours before game time during which we continued to hydrate ourselves (a process that begins 48 hours before a match and continues all the way to post match cool down if your club physio is worth a $hit). We never over-exerted ourselves until our real warmup began about 30 minutes before the game. Just general movement, stretching, talking about assignments and resposabilities amongst ourselves.... you know, to take our minds away from the pre game stress that builds up as you see the bleachers fill and feel the pressure to perform so you can keep your spot/move up to a higher division/keep from being sent down to the development team...... nothing like focused chit chat with the guys to ease the nerves!
I'll be honest with you, in pregame, I am one lazy SOB! I found that I was expending so much energy in my own private little warmup, trying to escape the pressure by being off by myself, that when the game started, I was losing my physical edge by 20 or 25 minutes in and would have to coast for at least 10 min or so to get it back. One game I got caught up in a particularly naughty story one of my teamates was telling, forgot about my routine, and barely broke a sweat until the 30 minute pre-game.....hell I felt like the energizer bunny! After that, I did just enough to get my muscles limber and my mind focused and that was all! My teamates always thought I was a prick for not joining in the banter anyway, so I think they were relieved to see me change my habits :)

Interesting that in Algeria, where it feels as if the sun is two feet above your head, that they do all the heavy work in the cool morning hours and save the slower tactical work and classroom/video stuff for the afternoon and evening when they are probably afraid they will melt in the heat!
