It includes a precent decent interview and article from Becks on his recent US tour. I was pleasantly surprised to see him on my magazine when I got up to go check the mail.

Imagine how big the photograph would have been if ESPN didn't hate soccer!

Really, everyone who reads these boards should buy a copy, to let them know we support soccer. And also it would help if you sent a note to them about it explaining why.

The Beckham stuff is great, but what has Chivas USA's Isaac Romo done to warrant a feature story and who is his victim?

I do think the tide is starting to turn between soccer and hockey for the 4th sport. Look at the headline in the upper right corner "remember hockey?"

Meanwhile soccer is the cover sport. But, I don't think we should get too excited since soccer has been on the front cover of Sports Illustrated a few times and nothing. And that's got a bigger readership than ESPN: The Magazine.

Though when my issue arrived in the mail yesterday, I almost fainted with joy. It is a really good article even if it attributes Beckham being tabloid fodder to soccer fan's frustration at lacking a magic moment (like a slam dunk) during a game.

I'm still scratching my head over that.

The premise of the story is that Beckham wants to play in the United States because he's tired of the English tabloids reporting on every time he leaves his house.

Here's the portion of the story that led to the title:

"He remains a thorn in England's side - a national anomaly: too pretty, too happy, too tacky, too sexy, too visible, too shameless - in short - too American. He wears Posh's knickers. He cuts his hair into a mohawk. He listens to hip-hop. He works the bling. Worse, he is a self-made, a walking meritocracy, a success born not out of breeding but of sustained effort, and if there's anything that irks the English more than a tall poppy, it's a tall poppy with no apologies."

Sorry guys, ESPN the Magazine belongs in the trash, along with everything else that bears their miserable moniker. Becks on the cover, so what? I remember when I once subscribed to the magazine because I really had no choice; it was for a poor kid's fundrasier. After three issues, I was fed up with all of the crap about sports I don't care about, as well as the ocassional PAGE (singular) about soccer, which was about as informative as a senior citizen on coke. I cancelled immediately. It was a beautiful day when I saw those three issues gracing the bottom of my neighborhood dumpster. They can put Ronaldinho, Henry, Eddie Johnson, Maldini, Ballack, Wright-Phillips, Beasley, Rooney, Saviola, Ronaldo, Adriano, and Trezeguet on the front cover of the next 12 issues and they still wouldn't see a penny from me. Screw ESPN!

The back cover has one of those adidas "Impossible is Nothing" ads featuring Beckham. If you want to see more soccer in the mainstream sports media, then here's another opportunity to show whether soccer sells. This edition also has a piece on Wayne Rooney and graphic showing an "all-world" team.

What a boring article.

Should be called ESPN Fancy the Magazine.

Well, sure, I agree that ESPN the Magazine is pretty much unreadable. But when the marketplace offers opportunities for consumers who want to see more soccer content to demonstrate that soccer sells, we should take them. We complain about how soccer is ignored in the mainstream sports media. If we want to help create an incentive to provide more coverage, then moving copies off the newstands helps. Letters and emails are good, but nothing speaks like the marketplace.
