Souness admits Jenas is unhappy
Friday August 05 2005

Newcastle boss Graeme Souness has revealed that midfielder Jermaine Jenas feels playing for the Magpies is "like living in a goldfish bowl'' but insists he will do all he can to keep him.

Souness dismissed speculation of a bust-up between himself and the £15million-rated player who has been the subject of intense transfer speculation this summer.

But he told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle: "I have spoken to the player's agent and he tells me that JJ is quite happy with things at the football club. But he says JJ feels that it is like living in a goldfish bowl being a United player in Newcastle and that is the biggest problem.''

Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham and Middlesbrough have all been linked with the highly-rated England star and may now consider they have got the green light to make a move.

The loss of Jenas would represent the biggest blow yet for Souness, whose side slipped out of Europe on Wednesday night, and who is desperate to bring in new players before the season starts.

However Souness stressed that he did not drop Jenas from the Intertoto Cup semi-final second leg clash with Deportivo La Coruna for any other reason than the persistent hamstring and back problem which has dogged the player through pre-season.

Souness added: "JJ has not had a problem with me or any of the staff as far as I am aware.

"Nobody on the playing side from the chairman down wants JJ to leave. Last year JJ played more games than anyone apart from Shay Given and I made him captain when Alan Shearer was out so that shows what I think of him,'' Souness told Newcastle's official website www.nufc.co.uk.

Souness has already brought in two midfielders this summer in Scott Parker and Emre, both of whom impressed in the defeat against the Spaniards.

But his problems in attack continue with Newcastle apparently no nearer to landing either of their prime targets, Nicolas Anelka or Luis Boa Morte.

Both their respective clubs rejected the Magpies' initial overtures and are still waiting for improved bids to be made.

Souness has managed to bring in three players in total so far this summer and admits he needs four more before the Premiership opener at Arsenal next weekend.

By contrast, Jenas would be the eighth first team squad member to depart - leaving the club in a worse state than they were at the end of last season's hugely disappointing campaign.I can't say I'm surprised by this considering his diminshing role last year and with Arsenal and Man ure sniffing around it would unsettle just about any player. I don't think we should sell for 10m pounds,we should demand another 4-6m pounds or a player on top of that if we must sell. Thoughts?

WHO CARES! WHO CARES!

If he thinks that living and playing at Newcastle is like living in a goldfish bowl how does he think living and playing at a huge club like Arsenal or Man U is going to be like?!

I agree. I think that he's using that excuse as cover to get a move to Arsenal.

Rivals battle it out for JJ

Jermaine Jenas

Newcastle United will sell Jermaine Jenas to either Arsenal or Tottenham for over £10m before the new Premiership season starts next weekend.

And United are hoping to bring Luis Boa Morte and another striker in before they visit Highbury for what is sure to be a daunting opener with Arsenal and there will be developments early next week.

The fact that Fulham have turned down two bids for their French midfielder Steed Malbranque has increased Boa Morte's hopes of finding a peg in the St James' Park dressing room.

Meanwhile, the furore surrounding Jenas yesterday and the Chronicle's revelation that he felt being on Tyneside was like living in a goldfish bowl has made it just about impossible for the England midfielder to stay with United.

My reading of the situation is that Jenas is also concerned about his midfield place with United following the arrival of Emre and Scott Parker.

Jenas hasn't asked for a transfer but he does not have to now that everything is out in the open.

There were reports last night that Arsenal would not be coming in for Jenas after selling Patrick Vieira to Juventus but United are expecting the call from Highbury in the next couple of days, leaving it a straight fight between them and their North London rivals Spurs.Well maybe he should go I think this is all smoke so he can go to the gooners.

He is on a squad with a manager who has more ego than brains, a chairman who continues to make an inadequate offer for a mentally unstable player, a legend and a world class keeper who will both be gone at the end of next season why wouldn't he want to leave. By the way when he refered to playing for Newcastle as living in a fishbowl he wasn't saying that he felt like all eyes were on him, no he was saying he was tired of swimming in crap.

I say get rid of him only if it's 12 million pounds or greater. But even with that sale, we need to BUY players. It's all good and well to get more money, but Souness needs to spend it to bring in some talent, for God's sake! If it can lead to Boa Morte, it may be worth it, but I have a feeling we'll just sell Jenas and not buy anyone else and have to bring up another person up from the reserves.

Papers - most of them report on football matches by consensus - no originality, they pursue huffs with players and managers and have their own petty agendas to pursue. They talk ******** for a variety of reasons. Its my personal view JJ is sick and tired of the shite that masquerades as a football club at NUFC and wants more.

Putting down any potential move to "goldfish bowls" or jeering is bollox - we'd rather see Dyer pedalled but there's no-one out there daft enough to buy him and put him on the kind of wedge NUFC has. JJ - for what its worth, we'd love you to stay and be a successful player at NUFC but don't talk ******** and treat us like mugs, son!
I tend to agree. Trying to save face in the eyes of the supporters. If you want to move to London man up and ask for a transfer, if not put the black and white and try help your club move back into the top six.

Is he worth the reported £8.5 million Spurs have bid for him?

I say he's worth around the £6 million mark, but then again, I don't get to watch him like you do.

What are his main attributes? It's not like he tackles hard or can run past players. So what make Jenas special?
