I want to make everyone aware of some major improvements I've made to the site http://footballclubs.dyndns.org/footballclubs/

One major improvement I've recently made is the addition of the league each club currently resides in, along with your ability to limit what clubs are shown on the map based on Level (as denoted at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_football_league_system) or league. It really helps to clean up the maps.

Another major change is the addition of a "map" tab to the left sides of the club labels. Click on them to jump to the stadium location at multimap. It's sweet, too, as there you can click the aerial tab and see the stadiums from satellite images.

Thanks for all the support everyone has given me on this beast.

Feedback always welcomed at yabewatch@mail.com.

Wow. That's even better!

I like the addition of sorting by League, but I think it proves my point about the "sub-map" clubs needing some sort of representation on the main map.

If you select "Premiership" on the England map, the only club shown is Boro!

thats because you ahve to zoom in on the maps for the big cities and areas that have lots of teams.

if you go into London you only see the Prem teams

Good site and nice revision. I got some errors about delimiters or something at the top of the screen when I clicked on the London map.

I know that. I posted earlier that I thought it might be a good idea to include some representation of all the clubs on the main page.

As it is, there is no single place that one can go to see a list of all the clubs. There's no real way to compare Premiership clubs with other Premiership clubs not in the same city.

Please don't anybody mistake this for a serious criticism - I think the site's fabulous. I just think that it could be a little bit better.

Really neat. Newcastle and Sunderland didn't show on my map. Maybe it is my browser.

gotcha. at first I agreed with you and was like what the hell, where are all the teams!!

if possible I would try to put a line from the cities into the oceans or something and have a list of all the teams that are contained within a certain magnifying glass.

Hey guys, thanks for all of the honest feedback. Yeah, I totally take to heart what everyone is saying. There are any number of ways to skin a cat, as they say. I'm continuing to make enhancements to the site (sorry about the "delimeter" error on the London page, as I was in the middle of updating some clubs in London), and as you saw, a major enhancement was the addition of being able to limit the teams shown by league. Hmmm...putting another label somewhere showing all the teams in the "multi club" cities could also get ugly, since for instance London has upwards of 20 top clubs. It's a difficult task to make it easy to navigate but also show a lot of details. Please note that you CAN go to one place to see ALL the clubs I have documented. There is a link for it in the upper left corner of the main page and it's at http://footballclubs.dyndns.org/footballclubs/allclubs.php.

As you'll likely note, my "forte" with the web is doing the techie side, not graphic design! I made it as easily maintainable as I could, by having it entirely database-driven. Note also that every element (stadium balls and club labels) is in a layer and thusly can be hidden/moved with those links I placed in the upper left corner of the main map.

Please continue to use and provide me feedback. Also, I realize there is some sort of funky problem in Firefox where *some* labels extend a bit too far in the height direction. I'm continuing to investigate that. Again, feel free to drop me a line anytime at yabewatch@mail.com.

Also, I'm looking for some passionate footballers to help me keep this site alive. It's a lot of work keeping all the info up-to-date. If you or anyone you know may be interested in helping me maintain and promote the site, please let me know.

Nope. That's because they're on a "sub map," and at the moment there's no indication on the main map of clubs on sub maps. You'll also notice that none of the Manchester clubs, London clubs, Liverpool clubs etc have representation on the main map.

I understand that it could get messy, arsenalfreaky, but maybe Bluto11 has a point. A line to a (relatively) open part of the map with a list of team names might help, even if it was only the crests or names or something instead of a full list and link.

I hear you guys loud and clear. Gotta head out of town for a couple weeks, but I promise to add the enhancement to show (somehow!) the teams which resides in the "sub maps" as you put it. Thanks a ton, guys.

Okay, thanks to Gothamite for a great suggestion.

I've added some major enhancements to my http://footballclubs.dyndns.org/footballclubs/ site. For one, I dropped the "noisy" main England in favor of an even larger map which is easier on the eyes. Also, if you narrow down which clubs are shown by choosing a league in the upper-left corner dropdown menu, the crests for the clubs which reside in the cities/areas with multiple clubs will be shown next to the "multi club" soccer balls. I've got a couple more enhancements coming, so please check back often. Good stuff. Please share with your friends and help me promote this thing. Thanks.

Much better. However still some bugs. Check this out. Limit it to Coke leagues. Then see where it puts Hull City and Crewe Alexandra's labels.

Any chance you'll be doing this for other countries/leagues?

Excellent site. I was always curious where the lower division clubs were located. Thought might be fun to follow a club way down in the nationwide conf....you know watch them climb into the pro ranks. And next time I get a chance to roam the English countryside, will have some smaller towns/cities in mind. Again, well done.

Very slick, overall. My girlfriend just moved to London for a bit....and your site is in her favorites so she can keep tabs on the new geography.

Great mapping!!!

I am going to England and was wondering what clubs/studiums I might be near at any given time.

Excellent design!

Thanks, everyone.

Cannon, I understand what you are saying about the labels maybe not showing exactly right, but I had to make them work on the main map with ALL club labels and stadium markers (soccer balls) there. Then, when you limit what is shown based on league, the labels are still in their same position they were before. The label coordinates are stored in a database. There is at times some overlap, just the way it is. Hey, life ain't perfect! Nope, I don't think I'll be doing other countries. As for doing other leagues, I've documented the 224 top clubs in England (http://footballclubs.dyndns.org/footballclubs/allclubs.php). But I quickly realized I simply couldn't fit any more clubs than the "top" clubs (Levels 1-6 is what I decided on) on the maps. I figure showing Levels 1-6 is quite of bit of detail. I have all of the other clubs documented, due to promotion/relegation.

Man, this site took a TON of work and will be an ongoing beast to maintain. In fact, I'm looking for help from people to keep the site up-to-date. Is anyone is willing to help me maintain and promote it? Please let me know. Thanks much.

Awesome, man. Simply stunning.

I'm helping promote it as much as I can, sending links to all my football buddies. Wish I could help you maintain it, but I think that code is out of my league....

You are incredible. I put both your sites as my favorites. I know just reading a little bit of it gave me a real education about all the lower division clubs.

Thanks, guys. As far as helping me maintain it, I'm actually kind of a techie and am more than fine with the logic behind the site. In fact, it's entirely database-driven and therefore I'm done with that grunt work. Now, I just need to be diligent in keeping the information about the clubs up-to-date.

Basically, at least until I possibly automate some or most or all of this, I need help from people when the following events occur:
1) A new England club forms. Usually they start quite low in the league system, but if they start to rise and get near the top leagues, I gotta get them entered into my site
2) A club folds
3) A club's stadium or stadium name changes
4) A club's stadium address changes
5) A club's website changes
6) A club's crest/badge changes
7) ....any other pertinent club info which may change
8) At the end of each season, I need to know which clubs get promoted/relegated, so I accurately reflect which clubs are in the top leagues (Levels 1-6) and include them on my maps

I think that's it. But it's still quite a chore when I have 224 total clubs documented, with 158 of them being the ones mapped (Levels 1-6). If you or anyone you know may be able to be a resource to me when such things change, I'd be very grateful.
