From ESPN Soccernet:
Sven-Goran Eriksson believes it would be 'good for England' if Michael Owen signs for Manchester United. The England striker, who was not a first-team regular at Real Madrid last season, has dropped even further down the Bernabeu pecking order following the summer arrivals of Brazilian pair Robinho and Julio Baptista

Eff you, Sven. Wouldn't it be infinitely better for England if Owen played on a Premiership team for which he could help bolster league competition? How about Middlesbrough, Portsmouth, or Man City? I'm a Gunner for life and would love to see him join Arsenal, but how in the blue hell does Owen joining one of the already rich, already stacked teams do anything for English football as a whole?

Improving the competition for the entire Premiership is in the best interests of England, not continuing to have 4-5 teams who can realistically win the title and the rest to wage an annual relegation battle.

Any thoughts?

Don't be stupid. He was refering to Owen and Rooney getting lots of playing time together before the WC.

Yep, that's probably what he meant.

I'm not being stupid. What if Owen signed with a mid-table Premiership club, where his presence up front could be paired with another young English striker, whose improved productivity could be used for the country in WC. Plus, if more EPL teams are truly competitive, it would help encourage young English footballers to stay in the country to develop versus going to other countries.

This sort of thinking would raise the bar for the entire Premiership competition and be excellent for farming more great English players.

Rooney and Owen are the first choice forward line. Therefore anything that gets them more playing time together is a good thing. It's that simple.

I'm not being stupid.

But you are being obtuse. Teso's right, Owen and Rooney playing together daily would be good for England, and I'd wager that 85% of the folks who saw the headline assumed that was what he meant before they even read the article.

I thought that so put me in the 85%.

I then figured that Sven might be trying to break up with some Spanish hussy in Madrid and is trying to get all of his England guys out of town so he doesn't have a reason to visit. Just a guess. If he comes out with a Becks to the EPL article tomorrow, you'll know I was right. ;)

Please don't tell me you bought Teso's act.

Let's check the bible...yep, there it is:

"After this, I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, so that no wind would blow on the earth, or on the sea, or on any tree. I saw another angel ascend from the sunrise, having the seal of the living God. He cried with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was given to harm the earth and the sea, saying, "Don't harm the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, until we have made the one called Teso a ruler over the talking rooms in Babylon." -Revelations, Ch 7.

Oh no its a sign of the end of days!

But then here comes the question: would Owen get to spend quality time playing with Rooney? Don't forget Man U still has RVN and even though his form has been questionable Fergie wouldn't drop him so easily. It would be bad if he leaves the Madrid benches to play in the Man U benches...........

I think this would be more of a long-term move, as van Nistledive is clearly not the same player he was (as much as Iplayedforchelsea wishes he was). I would expect Horseface to start the year before Shrek and Mini-Me get paired together around the New Year.
