Borussia Dortmund have turned down a €3 million (£2 million) offer from Arsenal for midfield sensation Nuri Sahin.

The young Turk, aged just 16, recently helped his country to win the Under-17 European championships and is widely regarded as the most talented Bundesliga player of his generation.

He only joined Bert Van Marwijk’s professional squad this summer and became the Bundesliga’s youngest-ever player to star in Europe when he was used in Dortmund’s goalless InterToto Cup draw against Sigma Olomouc.

Sahin is expected to make his Bundesliga debut on Saturday when Dortmund kick off their season with a visit to Wolfsburg’s Volkswagen-Arena.

Van Marwijk has reportedly urged the financially struggling club to keep hold of the youngster, who has also been scouted by Chelsea and Manchester United.

"If we keep him, Nuri will give us plenty of joy in the future," stressed the Dutch coach.

Managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke confirmed that Arsenal have made a firm bid for the youngster, but were told that Sahin is not for sale at the moment.

"We could have cashed in €3 million from Arsenal for him, but Sahin is tied to us until 2009 and in a couple of years he is sure to be worth a lot more," Watzke told Sportbild.

Arsenal's scouting network is vast and they have had huge success in recent years snapping up youngsters such as Cesc Fabregas, Philippe Senderos, Gael Clichy and Arturo Lupoli, but this time they look to have failed in their bid to snatch Sahin.

As an Arsenal fan I'm a little disappointed but at the same time I'm glad BVB sees enough promise in this youngster to hold onto him!

He was the MVP of last UEFA Tournament.

He shined during the U-17 Euro this May where he won the title with Turkey (as their playmaker) and was also voted Best player of the Tournament.

ps:

This week , Bundeshliga will start, and i am sure, he will play as soon as possible.

Nuri Sahin new star of Europe.

Sahin did indeed play in the first match.

He did well enough playing defensive midfield in front on the back four.

He won't stay there because that's Sebastian Kehl's position.

I think we'll see Sahin in an attacking position soon enough. I was impressed with him. I think we do have a future star on our hands.

I hope Sahin decides to play for Germany in the future. His father said that if the Germans called, Nuri wouldn't say "no" to an offer.

I hope Kehl returns next week, and then Nuri Sahin can play a more offensive role.

offer? you mean if they pay him more.

we don't need him, our midfield is strong enough.

I think Nuri already made it clear last week that he wants to continue playing for Turkey.

he's young. Maybe next week he says that he'd love to play for Germany.

I mean, it's actually quite sad that this is overall a discussion. This guy is born in Meinerzhagen, learned here how to play football, can speak perfectly German...

@mofo4life

Of course our midfield is strong enough. I don't want to see Nuri in the A-team now. I just think it's important that the DFB cares for him so that he doesn't play for Turkey's A-national team in a few years. Bastürk, Klasnic, Altintop, Bajramovic - they all said, they would have played for Germany but the DFB didn't care for such players and that's why they decided to play for Turkey, Croatia etc.

The guy was being sarcastic. There have long been suspicions of "under-the-table" payments to keep guys on their national teams.

why would there be under the table payments?

players are of course payed for playing in the national team by their federation. they´re payed for every day in the camp as well as for games , plus they get performance related bonuses. this is all completly open.

I'm listening to "Bild" too much then. They did an expose on this some years ago.
