He's getting older, but was still effective the last time the NHL played. Good move for the Jackets, IMO.

Good quality pickup for the CBJ. Definite step in the right direction.

He's getting a chance to play with two of the bright young stars in the league...
The guy is no fool, it's why he's won a few Stanely Cups in his career.

Our loss is your gain. Foote is getting older, but I think he will continue his strong play for you. I don't believe you should think the Avs were dumping him. The new cap and new, more offensive oriented rules, has caused high salaray teams like the Avs to consider very carefully where they spend their money. I'm guessing that while they still really like Adam, they felt the money would be better spent elsewhere.
He's workhorse and is a true professional, you will enjoy having him on your team.

In other CBJ news, we lost Spacek today to the Blackhawks. I guess we had one too many defensemen now? Doesn't make sense to me -- I'll just have faith that Klesla is better in 05 than he was in 03. A lot better.
But Bryan Berard has been picked up. That is a superb signing. Prior to having his orbital bone broken Berard was one of the best in the game. This is a very good pickup for BJ's.

The Flyers have got to be favorites to win it all.
Just because you got Forsberg?
You must not be a fan of history. Flyers always choke. Always.

And Hatcher. And they were within one game last time we had a season.
The Flyers are just stacked from top to bottom.
I didn't say they would win, I know they are chokers, I just said they gotta be favorites. They seriously look like the class of the East right now.
I'm not so sure a big, slow, punishing defender is going to be the way of the league this year. But Hatcher under the old rules is a servicable pick up.

I have always disliked Adam Foote - kind of thought of him as a overly whiny brute. Having said that, I can bite the bullet if it helps the BJs. Might take me a while to warm up to him though - not to mention the ribbing I'll take from my friends who have heard me call him every name in the book over the years.
Is it possible to be happy and cringe at the same time? Methinks it is.

P.S. I'm still bitter over the work stoppage.

I'm still bitter as well.
They also got defenseman Bryan Berard to a two-year deal.
I didn't see the news on Spacek, I always kinda liked the guy. Oh well.
The NHL is going to be so different this season.

I am still angry, but at the same time, I realize it was necessary for the good of the game. The players were dumb for not taking the "final offer" when they had a chance to save the season.
But I do find the new NHL to be quite compelling, in that everyone has a chance. Under the old rules, Nash may very well have been gone this year, if a big-money team was willing to eat draft picks. Now the Jackets will always have the werewithal to keep him here, because Toronto or New York or Detroit can't swoop in with a ridiculous offer that a small market club could never afford to match.
Baseball is the last of the might-makes-right dinosaurs....every other major American sports league has made it so brains can triumph over wallets.
And seriously....I wonder if it would be worth a summer or two to break the NY/BOS/LA payroll strangelhold, so that every team has chance if they manage their team properly.
There are some low-payroll teams that do well, but they have to be PERFECT with all of their evaluations, whereas the Yanks, Sox, et al can throw good money after bad until they finally get it right.
Anyway, hockey finally got it right in terms of competitiveness, so in that sense, I kinda think this whole mess was worth it. No more Wings, Avs, Stars, Leafs, Flyers and Rangers buying everyone in sight....although I will miss laughing at the suck-a$$ Rangers and their payroll. But then again, the Yankees used to be just as funny in the 80s, and then look what happened once they threw that money around intelligently...the Rangers were a dynasty waiting to happen under better management.

Living in (well, close to) a city that has been skating a group of expansion misfits, bruisers and gifted youth onto the ice for a couple years now, I should be happy that this is happening. The Blue Jackets signed defensemen Adam Foote and Bryan Berard while giving up Jaroslav Spacek. A sense of parity will crawl across the league as now even our town should be able to have just as much chance as the Detroit and Colorado to make the playoffs. Gone, however, will be that feeling of us versus the giants. Before, if we tied the Colorado Avalanche it was a massive feat worthy of much rejoicing and church bells. Now we should be able to compete against them with one of their better players.
