So I start anew this fall with coaching. I am coaching at Mt Brook SC (http://www.mountainbrooksoccer.com/). This will be my first season at MBSC. The difference between them and my old club is huge. Kasey Keller's step-dad is the DOC so that could provide some perks. He seems to be a very good coach and DOC. I am coaching two teams(U11 girls & U13 boys). My first practice with the boys will be tomorrow and both teams have team camp next week. My free time is about to be over. More to come.
have my 1st practice with the U13s. After watching them on Monday they definitely need to work on both individual and team defending. We'll be doing that tonight.

How do you feel about coaching a girls team and a boys team in the same season? Last year I coached a U17 boys and a U14 girls team. It took me a while to get used to the different dynamics of the teams.

I have been coaching HS girls and a boys U14 team so I'm used to it. I prefer girls mostly but I like coaching boys too.
1st practice went well. Had 14 of 16 players there. Intense practice. Most showed good skill on the ball. Have one big kid with real good skill. Looks like a central defender but plays like Zlatan. Well, not that good. ;)
My boys team has a team party today. A party after one practice. Gotta love that. Kind of a preseason get together. BBQ & swimming in the Brook.
Team party went great. Seems like a good group of parents. Team camp starts tomorrow for both teams. Let the fun begin!
Team camp finished up last night. It was a good experience but I wish I had been able to have different times for my two teams. I really enjoy working with the 95 girls. I like the 93 boys but I just feel more at home working with girls. My boys play tomorrow. On a side note, I had a girl do a double step-over in a scrimmage this week. Now it wasn't as smooth as Cristiano Ronaldo but for a 10 year old girl to be doing that is impressive.
My boys team won yesterday 4-0. They played ok. One goal was scored on a 45 yard free kick. This is a team of 12 year olds. I was dumbfounded that a 12 yr old had that kind of power. While I was pleased with the win we have lots to work on.
had practice last night with both teams. a few girls missed(probably because they thought it was rained out). boys had a pretty good practice except there is one kid that just doesn't listen. I've known him for years as he was a student of mine at the school where I work. It's really frustrating.
going to Tallahassee this weekend with my 93 boys. should provide some good competition.
it definitely provided good competition. we lost the first game 7-0 to a U14 team from Columbus(GA). We then played the home team Tallahassee Utd and played better but still lost 3-0. On top of that I lost one of my best players who happens to be a co-captain. Doctor said it was a sprain of his foot. If the pain persists, it could be a slight fracture that just didn't show up on the x-ray. Today we tied 2-2 vs a team from Thomasville(GA). All in all, a very poor showing. We have a lot to work on before we can even become a mediocre team.
forgot to mention on the positive side my U11 girls won their first game 7-1!
our club schedules all practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We do that so Mondays are for GK training and Wed is for fitness training. Players either go to GK or fitness. Tonight will be my first experience with fitness training. I know most of my boys will be there but the girls need a little selling.
I had 10 girls at fitness training out of 14 which is pretty good. One of those missing was my main GK who is excused cos she goes to GK training on Mondays. My boys team goes to Atlanta this weekend to play in the Silverbacks Classic. No idea about the level of competition. My girls play at home which means I'll miss their game again. I finally get to see them in a game on Labor Day weekend when we play in the Liberty Cup(a local tournament).
My U13 boys went 1-2 in Atlanta. We lost 3-2, won 4-2 and lost 3-1. We are improving but still need much work on both individual & team defending. My girls team tied 1-1.
My boys have the weekend off. I finally get to coach my girls in a game as we are playing in the Liberty Cup(local tournament). We play 2x on Sat and once on Sunday. Due to a MS team dropping out, we play a local team that we've already beat 7-0.
So far we are 0-2. We lost 2-0 in the first game. They had a big strong fast girl who we couldn't handle. At U11, size and speed win out over skill. In the 2nd game we ran into a buzzsaw. We lost 5-1 to a much better team. They were doing stepovers and overlaps. They were the top U11 team in their club while we are the 2nd of 3 in Mt Brook so I don't feel too bad. Today we should win but you know how soccer goes. We were down 4-0 at halftime and I told one of my girls that she was going in goal. I continued thru the team telling them their positions. By the time I was done she was crying hysterically almost to the point of hyperventilating. I ended up not putting her in at GK but told her that at U11 it is important that everybody experience all positions and she would play GK at some point. Hopefully the girl I start today will not have the same reaction.
we won our last game 3-2. played ok but no width. My boys played Wed vs the best team in the state and lost 3-0. scoreline was deceiving. we played toe to toe with them but couldn't finish our chances. Boys have a scrimmage against the 2nd team in our club of U14s(we are U13s). Girls play in Auburn on Sunday.
My boys lost today 2-1 but some positives definitely were to be found. Moved one of my players that normally plays as a center mid to center back and he played great. Read the game extremely well and played confidently out of pressure. We also possessed the ball pretty well and had more chances than the U14s. Getting better we are.
