View Full Version : Why not Owen?

seriously, why not bid for Michael Owen? there are rumours Tottenham is gonna spend 12million on a dutch guyI have never heard of (not, admittedly, that that means anything) and about whom seems to be mixed opinion - why do that when you can get Owen for that amount? Isn't it worth a shot to see if he would lower his wages to come play at White Hart Lane? I know, I know, they are not in Europe - but chances are likely he isn't playing any european games this year anyway, so I would think the chance to pair up with Dafoe, show Sven they work well together in anticipation of the World Cup, and put a team in Europe next season would be attractive
put Owen up front and I think this team can challenge for CL
so, someone tell me why this makes no sense

Right now we have 5 (6?) forwards/strikers. Both Dafoe and Keane, both of the Owen type, are doing well. I'm not sure what El Ham's style is, but he seems to playing well and was brought in as a player with lots of potential. I thought about the possibility, but I think bringing in Owen will cause disharmony in the team right now.

I don't think he and Defoe would make a good partnership - at least they haven't really gelled for England, for one reason or another (i point to the wales game). I know Sven prefers Owen and Rooney, but equally effective would be Defoe and Rooney - i feel.
I think Owen's too small to work next to another smaller striker, at the moment i think Mido and Defoe would work well.
But as a forward in his own right he's a fine player. I read today on the BBC that Newcastle are going for him at 12m.

Agreed with everything said so far.
He can't play with JD, end of.
Also I doubt he would want to come to us in all honesty, unless newcastle are his only option.

We would have to sell Defoe if we were to bring in Owen.

The only way the two would work would be in a 4-3-3 with a CF type or a man in the hole. However, even then it would depend on who could play left and right. I love a 4-3-3 personally and I have heard Jol does as well, however this team is not built for it. We have too many Center Mids and Wingers to ever give up on the 4-4-2.
As for Kuyt, he is a great target man with a nose for goal. Perfect for a team with wingers like Routledge, Lennon and Ziegler. I would include Reid in that list but he was busy with an Eclair.

Owen is a proven goalmachine, his strike rate has been phenomenal for years and he's only 25. He'll certainly become England's top ever goalscorer in a couple of years time and if people don't think he'd add something then i dunno what a guy's got to do to get recognition around here.
Ok so maybe he wouldn't work so well with Defoe, but he is better than Defoe. He's a better finisher (with his head and both feet) and his all-round game is far better. Watch him play and see how few balls he gives away compared to Defoe. Watch how alert he is the whole game, always on the defenders shoulder ready to sprint onto throughballs. Defoe has a long way to go before he will considered england's top striker.
I'm not knocking Defoe. I think he's better at creating goals out of nothing and has a better long range shot and is very good in the box. But he's not as intelligent....yet.
There would of course be problems if he signed for us. Who would leave and who would partner him (he would be 1st choice striker no doubt)? And i think these questions pose many problems that Jol doesn't really want to entertain right now.

Another good post Rmort. I agree about Defoe not being a intelligent footballer, the number of times he is caught offside has to come down.

One possibility would be:
Defoe to Liverpool, Owen to Spurs (both £12m deals perhaps)

I would not swap Owen for Defoe.
Owen is a great striker, but we do not need him with Defoe here. I think given the right coaching and improvement, Defoe can be better than Owen in 2 seasons, and then will continue to be better as Owen gets older and slower.
Owen will go to Man Utd or possibly Chelscum (less likely now they've recalled Crespo), although all these clubs will feign disinterest for a while to get the price down. Madrid need to sell him more than clubs need to buy at this moment in time.

Why Liverpool?
some guy put it on a weblog, you can see it on newsnow. Have not read it though.
Although Owen is a good player, I can't see our striking dept changing.

If it isn't broke, don't fix it. I agree with Sendo, Defoe can be as good or better than Owen in the long run.

I have thought long and hard about this. If Owen were to join (in some distant world that is) then we would have to sell Defoe.
Would I prefer Owen over Defoe......yes.
But it won't happen, for a few reasons. Number 1, we are not in the CL.
Number 2. We can't afford his £80,000 p/week wages.
That sums it up really.

why not owen? because we already have 4 wonderful strıkers. but maybe he can play for us when Mıdo returns to Roma from Loan.

I doubt Mido will leave us. I am sure Jol will want to make his move permanent.

If Owen came, Defoe could kiss my nuts goodbye!
Owen kicks Defoe's arse! And Keano's! And Kack-noute's! And Mido's!
Seriously, this is about improving the team, not sentiment. Owen is an incredible player! You who want to keep what we've got over what we could have, smell!

Someone on Spurs Community said we have had an offer for Keane and that if we accept it, there's a £12m bid for Owen ready to be faxed. Not sure how reliable that info is but he said a few other things that seemed to be true.
