I was just chilling and surfing the net with the radio on in the background and thought I heard that David Jones was going out on loan to Preston. Can anyone confirm?
Story confirmed: A season long loan.

Preston loan United youngster Jones
Manchester United midfielder David Jones has joined Preston on a year's loan.
The 20-year-old midfielder was unveiled at Deepdale on the same day as Stoke winger Lewis Neal, who has signed a three-year deal, with Marlon Broomes moving in the opposite direction.
Southport-born Jones followed North End as a child and told the club's website: ' hope to improve individually as a player and give the team some success and hopefully get Preston into the Premiership.'

well that IS interesting... either SAF thinks Smith is a long term solution to CM or he's gonna buy one this summer because you cant track the progress of someone who is on loan very easy and this will likely be Keano's last year with us as a player. You can't just simply not plan to have someone who's experienced and skilled (ie ready to start) at the CM position when you are replacing your best in that spot.

Preston is not that far from Manchester.
Beckham benefitted from his loan spell there, I hope Jones gets the chance to shine there this season...

Well better this than our bench this season. He'll be in a bruising league physically so we'll see how well he does. Now we have to track the progress of Foster and Jones.

Damn I was gonna say it. Maybe Jones can have the impact, hopefully more, that David had after following in seemingly his footsteps.
I think this is a good move for David to get some experiance with REGULAR first team being the key, hopefully.

Don't forget the progress of Spector and Eagles. I think this off season has already proven interesting in the number of loans that have happened, especialy when you think that Richardson still might go back to West Brom. Definitely shows the strength of our reserve team last year.
This loan is very interesting especially after the things flying around about him not being loaned out this year. I agree with johno here. It is either Smith showing enough combined with Fletcher or someone else is coming.

I think it's a good move. It would have been better for Jones if he had gotten regular first team games with the first team, but since it seems rather unlikely I think the best thing for him right now is a loan spell. He's way past reserves level, and he needs the experience of playing in front of crowds and in a first team. Nonetheless, I think by the end of his loan spell, Jonesy will need to convince Fergie that he has reached first team standard, both technically and physically.
The loan could also mean that either Fergie plans on keeping Phil Neville, or that he has set his sights on signing a central midfielder.

So much for giving him a year of experience next to Keane...

Good, hope he does well there. Looks like several of our youth players are going on loan which suggests Fergie is priming them for maybe a shot at the first team next season.

Those are my feelings ... I wasn't sure how the roster was going to allow this, but was hoping.

One moment he's Roy Keane's future successor, the next he's going to spend his 21st birthday playing in the Championship...despite United's shallowness in central midfield.
Riiiiiight.

Yeah man, because no United youth players touted for first team stardom have ever gone on loan to PNE and gone on to become world famous stars of the game winning buckets of trophies with United.

To be fair, the rumours circulating on the internet about Fergie saying that Jones was Keane's future successor in his eyes were probably a hoax. Somebody probably posted it somewhere on a messageboard, and did a very good job of making it sound realistic, and then it must have found its way into several discussion boards and emails.
I think if Jones had nothing to gain from going to Preston on loan, then Fergie would be wrong in letting him go out on loan. The thing is that our squad is not necessarily that thin in the midfield - even if Phil Neville and Klebs are sold, we still have Keane, Scholes, Smith, O'Shea, Fortune, and Miller who can play there. There is still the possibility that Fergie will make one more signing this summer, and my guess is that he will concentrate on bringing in a central midfielder.
Jones would probably have had to play most of his games for the reserves, and then wait for Cup games and league games against relegation battlers for his chance. Fergie probably feels it is better for him to spend his time out on loan, and PNE are a very good Championship side (possibly as good as some of the newly promoted Premiership sides). They are better now than they were when Becks joined them in the early 90s. Jones definitely has good technical ability and a good footballing brain, but he needs to improve on the physical aspects of his game. Hopefully playing in the Championship for a year will help him in that department, and come 2006 Keano's retirement will pave the way for Jones to break into the first team.

I'm not happy about this at all. But I suppose as written in my original synopsis of the player - he's been sent out to 'toughen up' Why the hell didn't his mother force feed him spinach, eh? eh?
As has been said, Jones has surpassed reserve team level.. the loan, I would hope, is because we are getting another player in this window who would absolutely blight Jones' chances of getting (m)any games. Oh well, will be watching PNE all season long now  let's, see how Jones stands up to being clattered every 5minutes.
I do wonder what'll happen with Rossi now...he is also 'too good' to play at reserve level.... *shudders

Don't be an ass.
Despite your glibness, the situations are quite different factually. Jones will be 21 by the time he leaves Preston. If he's not good enough to play semi-regularly in the 1st team by that time, the odds are very, very good he'll never be more than a bit part player.
Being loaned at 18 to Preston is just fine. At 20-21...it means you lack the requisite quality.

You're wrong. In no way whatsoevr does Jones lack 'quality' your blanket statement is way off. He is going there to toughen up. Jones has nothing to gain technically from a stint in the championship.
I'd expect you to think before posting something so off base, haven. Has someone hijacked your keyboard or something ;) :p
