the US and Mexico are only currently above Peru, Bolivia, and Venezuela.. you guys are not any better then the rest really.Well their is no solid proof right now one way or the other. All I can say is our reserved players beat Columbia reserved players 3-0. We beat Uruaguay & Paraguay last time we played them. We beat Chile at least 3 times in a row including the last one at Chile. You S. Americans are still thinking in the 90's when you use to be better then us.

Yeah, its Bolivia considering you guys never beat em.. i guess by your logic they are better then you, and they are a bottom side S.A team.

Yeah, its Bolivia considering you guys never beat em.. i guess by your logic they are better then you, and they are a bottom side S.A team.See, your mind is in the 90's. Bolivia hasn't played us this decade. And don't tell me Chile is anywhere near our level. Brazil beat them 5-0. We almost always lose to Brazil by 1 goal. We haven't allowed 5 goals since 1990. We haven't lossed by 5 goals since God knows when. And you said key word reserved. So I guess we have more depth than Colombia. I hope we play one of your S.American teams in this WC (except Brazil or Argentina). Remember we outplayed Colombia in WC94. I have the tape and we could have easily 4 or 5 goals. Lalas had a legit goal taken away from him when the ref wrongly callled him offside. And that was with a team not as nearly as good as the team we have today.

Yeah, but consider also WHO Argentina and Uruguay had to play against!
They didn't call Argentina's group (along with Nigeria, England and Sweden) the "Group of Death" for nothing.
Uruguay had favorites France and surprise team Senegal to deal with.
The only major achievement for the US was to have beaten Mexico, which was awesome. I would hardly compare their matches to what Argentina had to go through.

As for the question this poll is asking, I'd say the Socceroos have some fierce teams to deal with, no matter WHO ends fifth (Likely Uruguay, Colombia or Chile)
because these are teams who are out for blood in their final two matches, whereas the Aussies always breeze through minnows for the chance to play Conmebol.
I think that although they have the ABILITY to beat a Conmebol team, they won't.

After the example given vs Salomon Is. I don't think the AUSSIES will forgive themselves if they don't qualify this time around. I'm crossing my fingers and still hoping they will. Go Australia! :)

let's be fair, though...beating the Solomon Is. 7-0 is expected of Australia.
Colombia or Uruguay won't be even a 1/100th as easy.

Well, really, Usa was lucky. In the last games of group D you lose with Polonia, and that almost end all for you. luckily for u, Portugal didn't won vs. Corea. After that u defeated Mexico and advance.
Argentina didn't have this luck, and neither Uruguay. If anybody watch Senegal vs Uruguay, maybe the most vibrant game in the World Cup, we end the game pressuring aganist their line goal. We didn can make the 4th goal.
And Colombia didnīt reach the world cup. And Paraguay lost with Germany, like you.

USA was lucky with 4 pts. to advance and then having to face Mexico which I consider a weaker team then you would expect after barely getting to the second round. But what you probably didn't see was how Donovan got a bad call after he scored a goal in the first few minutes of the game, by that lame Chinese ref, and then seconds later Poland scored. That changed all the momentum to Poland. USA actually outplayed Poland but they were snake bitten in that game. I have the DVD of that game and I seen it several times. We actually played better in that game then we did against Korea. I'll admit S.Korea totally outplayed us.
Look I even gave Colombia too much credit. I forgot they didn't even make the WC in 2002.
Paraguay lost to Germany like us by score. But as far as the game went we took it too the Germans, while Paraguay played defensively and hoped for counterattacks.

I met Hurtado "El Tanque" by the way when he played for the Galaxy. He scored a lot of goals but he also missed so many easy chances. He didn't really backtrack and play defense. It's ironic that his fellow countryman coach Octavios got rid of him. I really liked him as coach. They also had a forgettable midfielder from Equador for a short time. What would have been great is if the Galaxy would have had that midfielder (I can't spell his name) that played in the Mexican league for years. I last saw him on Nexaca and in the WC where he scored a goal and also has a brother on the team. He reminds me of Cienfuegos only better.
If I had to pronounce his name in English it would be something like ogg-e-naug-wah or is it ock-e-nog-wah. Well I'm sure you can fix and correct it.

Well, each country have a style, Paraguay never play offensive football.
They lost in France with France in 2nd round too, then they play like against Germany. However they are a hard team and never lost for 3 goals against someone. Is a valid strategy, the good teams begins of back to forward...
And we outplayed S. Korea after Worl Cup, in a friendship match with Hiddink like coach. We played in Korea an defeated they 2:0. But like i said before to you, training matches dont are real proofs for comparision.

Too true. nevertheless,Australia does have an upper level squad at par w/ any fifth placed S. American team IMO. :)

Australia???..NO CHANCE !!!
They should go in the outbacks and play with their kangaroos.
G'day mate, a clean fresh air outback kicks ass over a stinky big over populated city but why go to the outback when we have them in our backyards??
Well actually havnt seen my pet kangaroo since that croc moved in my backyard.
Anyways, have to go throw another shrimp on the barbie.

What a coincidence! I saw your kangaroo hop on a tram in Bourke Street last week! (It had a six pack of VB's in it's pouch at the time.) ;)
PS: Can anyone explain to me how such a large proportion of this thread is devoted to USA vs South America debates? I can't see the relevance to Australia's WC chances....

So the first leg will be held in S. America with the second game in Australia four days later. Not much of a break for travel and time adjustment.
How does this figure into the mess?
Looking at the standings the S. American team probalby won't be decided until the last game on 8 Oct.
