so what is the point? I never said Australia didn't deserve to win that game, now did I?... this is ridiculous! they lost it, so take it like a man that is so sissy to say the other team didn't deserve to win it...
in 2002 we again played play offs against Ireland and dominated the away game but lost and won the home game so we couldn’t make it to the world cup but none of our players or the coaching staff said anything that remotely resembled "Ireland didn't deserve to be in the world cup"...
If you actually listen to it, Venables says that Australia didnt deserve to lose like they did, he didnt once say that Iran didnt deserve to be there

no he did, he said "they didn't deserve it... we didn't deserve to loose" even he knew what he said is just stupid so tried to change it... unless you can find a reason for using the word “deserved” twice in one sentence! ;)

The reason he used it twice in one sentance is that he got paid a lot of money to get Australia into the finals and he was trying to hide the fact that he left Australia's best defensive player out of the side and didn't even bring him on when we had a two goal lead. It was a game we should have won, but we stuffed it up. In any case its history now and we should be looking to the future which is looking as good for Australian football.

thank you!.. that was all I wanted to say (and it was only the coach) he lost it and tried to hide behind "they didn't deserve it" which you can only use when your opponent cheats... anyways he is not even Australian (didn't he get sacked from England NT as well) and Australians didn't say anything like that....
I am sure even Australia misses out on this WC they have a 90% chance making it the next one as they are in the AFC and no more short end of the stick!

AC Milan didn't lose their particular game either. It was 3-3 from memory.
Even in the best of semantics, one game final has a winner and a loser, regardless if it is decided by penalty shots or not. AC Milan lost. :)

well I don't know about you but after playing dozens of qualification round games against quality opponents and going through play offs... which totally makes it unfair for Iran facing Australia... Iran teams was simply tired and out of energy for these games while Australia was full strength.. then the coach can't take a loss and says "they didn't deserve it" well I'd say "up your ass looser"
Australia full strength? Umm i dont think so. You think a team is at full strength playing the likes of New Zealand, Fiji, Tahiti and the other islands?? LOL. I would much prefer the teams playing Japan, Saudi Arabia like the Iranians were doing.
Tired?? what a load of crock. How long does it take for players to recover? They are usualyl back to full fitness (withstanding injuries) about 2 days after a game.
Iran had 3 chances to make the world cup and took it on their third. Australia had 1 and unfortuantely missed it. Shouldnt we have another 2 chances like Iran?
and yeah i agree that it happened 8 years ago. why bring it up now.

Actually, if you want to get picky, a game decided on kicks from the penalty mark is officially recorded by FIFA as drawn. Thus the 1994 WC Final was drawn. Brazil won the championship on penalty kicks.

what exactly are you on about? Australia experienced only 2 international travels for this playoffs while Iran had dozens before that... jetlag has a very negative effect on players... and then you have the fatigue factor but anyways even if you say Iran and Australia were the same strength that still doesn't give any coach the right to say, the other team didn't deserve it... you can say Australia deserved to be in WC and I agree 100%... but tough luck...

welcome to the international soccer, unless you have solid proof that Iran paid the refs for that, it is all part of the game... you are not the first team in the world that loose on wrong call by refs... Iran experienced it about a million time!

If you want to state that Australia didn't lose against Iran then you would have to say AC Milan didn't lose against Liverpool. I agree the results were negative for those teams, but the matches were both draws. In fact Australia's was even more of a loss as it didn't even get to the penalty or extra time tie breakers.

FOr a start, these are very highly paid pro's we are talking about here, therefore they should be able to get over any jet lag, for this is what is expected of them when they play at either club or international level..
Secondly, for someone who watched his team play in the finals in 1998,(as opposed to the aussies) there seems to be a lot of anger there, Why exactly? It's over big fella, time to get pissed off about something else. ;)

What Iran may have lacked in fatigue they made up for with preperation cause they got to play important matches. Australian players would have been more jet lagged from flying from europe into Australia, than Iran, than back to Australia. No?? Some may have gone straight to Iran not sure?
Go study sports science and you would realise that jet lag doesnt last long at all so all Iran's other travels in other playoffs wouldnt of counted towards this match.
and dont get ahead of yourself, i never said i agree with the comments the coach made. I think every team that makes the world cup deserves to be there. Players have been striving for that position since starting soccer so tell them they dont deserve being there.

Its funny how all these yanks who have no idea about Aussie soccer, say that Australia can't qualify. :p
:
It's a bit much innit , bloody sepo's !! The yanks get a red carpet ride to the cup every four years ! While we get a playoff.. FFS when we went out against IRAN we didnt loose a match a still didn't qualify !!! Thank christ we were accepted into ASIA ,How good is it gonna be having luxury of being able to loose 3 games and STILL qualify !!!!!!

Iv actually met a few americans that are going for Australia. its the south american foreigners based in USA i find that are goign for Uruguay so lets not get that confused.
Proper americans should be supporting Australia as both countries love underdogs. Im one that loves seeing USA do well in the world cup. Why? because oyu know the soccer loving countries hate it.
