Well..here we go!!!! Week 1

time for points!

I wanted to do this thread a little earlier than we usually do, so people can add some pre-season assessment in here. Also gives people plenty of time to field some line-ups.

Maybe we can get some stats from Gregoriak on this great historical rivalry?

If anybody gets to read "Tor!: The Story of German Football (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/095401345X/qid=1122938927/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_11_1/202-1592539-2140627)" by Uli Hesse-Lichtenberger, there is a great chapter on these two teams.

Bayern and Gladbach had a stronghold on German and European football in the 1970s with the likes of Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Mueller and Uli Hoenes for Bayern and Guenter Netzer, Berti Vogts and Jupp Heynckes for Gladbach.

During the decade, the two teams combined for eight Bundesliga titles (Bayern 3, Gladbach 5), two German Cup trophies (one each), three European Champions Cup crowns (all Bayern) and two Uefa Cup titles (both Gladbach).

Moenchengladbach won the first two Bundesliga titles of the 1970s before Bayern won three straight.

Gladbach then overtook the Munich side to win three consecutive of their own from 1975-77.

But while Bayern continued their supremacy of German football - winning six league titles in the 1980s and six more since 1990, Gladbach have fallen on harder times.

Good stuff BMIKE, nice preliminary work.

My lineup is as follows: (nothing suprising)

................Kahn
Sagnol...Lucio...Ismael...Lizarazu
.............Demichelis
Brazzo...........................Karimi
...............Ballack
......Makaay......Pizarro

Standard backline with Kahn in net. Demichelis IS our defensive mid, no matter how many looks Owen Hargreaves gets there (I do see Owen as a LB however). Schweinsteiger and Deisler don't see to be in form yet, and I doubt Ze Roberto is as well, so my wide positions go to Mr. Faithful (Brazzo) and Karimi (based on the assumption from my readings that he likes to attack the left flank from the center position). If all were healthy, I would say either Deisler or Schweiny for Brazzo. Up top, I don't think Makaay is going to be missing from anyone's lineup, but Pizarro is his best wingman. Guerrero, Scholl, Hargreaves, Deisler, Schweiny, Ze Roberto... any of them will make an appearance at the interval.

Seeing that it took me 10 minutes to read this reply, I think not. ;)

No, don't worry, I will purchase one. I am just a cheap bastard... you know the guy who buys the first pitcher so he doesn't have to buy one the rest of the night.

I'm pretty much with eissman except I doubt Karimi and Brazzo will start on the wings. I think both will start...on the bench....eventually come in.

Starting wingers will be Schweinsteiger and Deisler I think...or Magath might just start Ze on the left and put Basti on the right like the end of last season, which worked out really really well.

Who the heck are these guys?? And why are they in the Bayern forum?? LOL, LOL, LOL!!!! :D

I knew Elber would be coming back, but is Effenberg coming back as well??

ALSO, the thing with Bayern's lineup is that it seems whenever I put down my lineup it gets picked a part for one player or another, because of players I prefer. I am not going to make a post after this date, until the Ballack situation is settled. Because his spot could free up a much needed space for our midfielders. My prefered starters are Makaay, Ballack, Lucio, Ismael, Sagnol, Kahn, and Lahm (when healthy). My controversial starters are Pizarro, Schweinsteiger, Deisler, and Hargreaves. If Ballack leaves I could see Deisler or Karimi playing the attacking midfield and the other would play a wing with Schweini. I do like Brazzo, Guererro and Demi, particularly Brazzo because he is fricken awesome, just I don't think good enough to be big time starter. I DO NOT LIKE Ze, I can't believe that guy signed another year for us, and I do somewhat like Liza but isn't he just as old as Kahn :( ??

It looks like Gladbach will line up this way (4-4-2, with two defensive midfielders and two offensive minded wide midfielders): Keller; Bogelund - Strasser - Helveg - Jansen; Kluge - Kamphuis - Broich - Heinz; Neuville - Sverkos. Possible changes to that line-up could see Fukal for Bogelund and El Fakiri or Ulich for Heinz. Elber is still not up to speed from his injuries last season (but may be used as a late game substitute), and Ziege is injured (and stinks anyway; the youngster Jansen is the future; how long will be it be before Bayern buys him?).

Since Gladbach returned to the 1.BL for the 2001-02 season, the teams have met eight times, with Gladbach winning two (1:0 in season opener in 2001 and 2:0 in last season), Bayern three (2:1 last season, 5:2 in 2003-04, and 3-0 in 2002-03), and three draws (all 0-0, one each in the 01-02, 02-03, and 03-04 seasons). Bayern is 3-0-1 (American convention of W-L-T) in Munich; Gladbach is 2-0-2 in Moenchengladbach. Gladbach's highest-profile friendlies this pre-season were at Celtic and home to PSV, both of which resulted in 0-0 draws. Personally, I think this is going to be be another long season for Borussia fans (I'd put the over/under on firing the new coach, Horst Koeppel, at 14 games). I don't know who's going to score goals for them, and their defense last year was at times terrible and has only only been marginally improved in my book. My prediction for Friday: Bad Guys 2:0 Good Guys.

my bad I thought it was Effenberg because they were saying that he might suit up for match, couldn't tell if that is what he aged too. Can't tell the difference of ugly Germans when they get older. They all look like Oli Kahn in the end :D :p

Who was saying he might suit up? Effenberg had his "retirement" match in Gladbach on 7/23/05, but it was never the case that he was coming back to play for Die Fohlen.

And BTW, if anyone cares, Gladbach's friendly in Glasgow was against Rangers, not Celtic, as previously reported by yours truly (Celtic, Rangers, what's the difference, right :) ).

’Gladbach Suffer Sonck Blow (http://www.soccer365.com/EUROPEAN_NEWS/Germany_News/page_177_102105.shtml)

Mönchengladbach striker Wesley Sonck will be sidelined for six weeks after sustaining broken ribs from a collision with Wilfred Bouma during a scoreless friendly with PSV Eindhoven.

I hope Helveg plays better for Gladbach against Bayern than he did all season for my other team Norwich. Denmark's captain?? He didn't even look good enough to be Monserrat's captain during his season in the EPL.

Hopefully we will put Bayern in their place and get off to a flying start so we can achieve our ambition of finishing in the lofty position of 12th!! (makes me dizzy just thinking about it!!) Well anywhere above the goat lovers will do!!

May the best team win, as long as its not you!! :)
