LOL

Anyway, Viera is more or less certain (then again, Baptista was more or less certain........ ). IMHO what we need right now is a centre midfielder, cause 3 natural midfielders might not be enough (Hleb would have been good, but Wenger seems to hate playing there :( ). I wouldn't mind getting Jenas, provided the fees are reasonable which I doubt will be, at least for the moment. Does anyone have a better suggestion?

No offence but I think only fans of this club should be able to start our transfer thread. :)

I remember someone saying something about Vincent Kompany in the last thread.

Heres a small clip of him in action. I would love to see him in the center of Arsenal's midfield.

I'm just giving up on transfers, more like it. we hear the same music every year ' our kids will do the job'. yes, they may, in EPL but thats also difficult with the money bags around.
CL, unfortunately, is getting more difficult for us. it seem slike we have developed a phychological barrier in this competition. i dont think even our players believe the hype or wenger's words about us doing something in CL.

I would normally agree, but when you end up pushing 150 posts above the limit with no sign of a new thread... ;)

That video has bit the dust btw.

True, plus Teso delivered the right message with the thread title!

Brought these quotes over from the last thread. BTW I gave up on the list of dmid,cb, and gks. No point and not worth the hassle given the freak out people had on the last thread over one lower ranked guy. So moving on...

Let's focus on guys we CAN get. Mahamadou Diarra...Modeste M'Bami.....I say we throw money at PSG for Modeste M'Bami...PSG have underperformed lately and could probably use some cash, and they look a bit overstocked in midfield with M'Bami, Cana, Edouard Cisse, Landrin, and Dhorasoo.
M'Bami and Cana aren't big names and they are young...but they're as good or better than Flamini at the moment, can be gotten on the cheap and we do need more depth. If we can't get an experienced world-class name to partner Gilberto then we should just keep loading up on quality youngsters so we can have 3 or 4 competing for the spot. We DO have the world's best manager of young talent...let's hope he gets even more to work with.

Diarra is quality (but I think we've got little chance of getting him) but I've felt that M'bami might be part of PSG's problems. I like the general plan you outline but not sure about M'bami. Is he better than Flamini? Probably but only when he actually plays up to his skill level. He certainly didn't look to have Flamini's heart and workrate as PSG slipped down the table last season. On the other hand, he would certainly be one of the cheaper options at the moment.

YESSS an Uruguayan to play for Arsenal...I like the sound of that. Viera's a sharp keeper, he's kept Carini and Munua out of the national team and they're both quality. I was really pushing for Carlos Kameni over Silvio Proto, Timo Hildebrand, and whoever else was suggested, but I never thought AW would go for someone like Viera. He'll be a good #2 and hopefully #1 when Lehmann moves on.

Well Munua was horrible in WCQ so Viera taking his place isn't really amazing. I'm hoping that Viera is really just "one of the options" as Wenger said and not the first choice. There are high quality proven keepers that we could get that we should take a run at before going for another keeper with no record in Europe. Sure Viera was good at the Copa America (against mainly B squads) and he's played well in a few WCQs but he is still closer to being a prospect than a sure thing in my opinion. I trust Wenger in most things but picking GKs isn't one of them. :D

Anyone know if his recent time as a starter for their national team will be enough to get a permit or are we hoping to win it on appeal? Here is some background info (http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/041101/1/2j0q.html) on Viera.

I think we should sign Diego Maradonna now that he's lost some weight. :D

We have one month so lets hope they're doing their homework and get the players we need.

Looks like Wenger will make up his mind soon on Song & Christanval (seems to have forgotten previous deadlines).

What happened to Traore (sp)?

Victor Kompany would be a good buy but Anderlecht would be reluctant to sell him unless it was for BIG money, and we'd probably spark a bidding war with Inter, Juve, Chelsea, Milan, and Real Madrid all involved, most of those clubs not only can throw more money at Anderlecht but would probably offer to loan Kompany back to Anderlecht until they need him.

I don't know how many experienced first class goalkeepers are really out there (De Sanctis, Toldo maybe...but they'd cost big money). Viera seems like one of the best possible options. And it's likely he has a Spanish or Italian grandparent which makes getting a work permit in the U.K. easier, right?

Kompany could play in the center of defense or as a ball winner in midfield. He has speed, technique, strength. Very exciting. That said, he just committed to Anderlecht for an extended term this summer - ensuring they'll have tons of bargaining power when the big teams come in for him (next summer). I doubt we could get him.

There are two barriers to jump over for any club wanting to get Kompany. One, getting the player to want to move. And two, tempting the club to sell. The first one would be tough, as Kompany doesn't seem in any hurry to move on. And he wants to play, so any club would have to convince him that he would play regularly - he has specifically stated that he would not leave Anderlecht to sit on the bench somewhere. As for Anderlecht, if Kompany was wanting to go, its just a matter of matching Anderlecht's valuation. They have said they want 20m Euros, but people who follow the club figure they would jump at something just over 15m. The key remains getting the kid to want to move. No use bidding before that, really.

From what I've seen of them, I think Essien might be a bit more of a complete player at this point. But he's also 23-24, where as Kompany is 19. I've also heard the young defender isn't totally consistent (which isn't unexpected in a younger player). But they both offer versatility - Kompany can play holding midfield or centre back and Essien can play attacking or defensive mid. I don't know that he would be equally as Essien right now, but I don't think he would be much less in the long term. Smaller initial investment, as well.

I would want Kompany only as a Central Midfielder. With those silky skills he could be the new Redondo.

I've heard the midfield is where he is best suited, but I have only ever seen him play as a defender.
