So less than 24 hrs after Arsene confirmed they were looking at this player according to reports this morning Arsenal have signed the 22 yr old Uruguayan goalkeeper Sebastian Viera from Nacional. The player was quoted as saying (http://www.goal.com/NewsDetail.aspx?idNews=77245):-
It’s a dream come true to be signed by such a big club like Arsenal. I was very happy when I was given the good news and would like to thank everyone who made the transfer possible.

I owe a lot to Nacional, who gave me everything and I am looking forward for this big step in my career
The reports about him suggest that he is regarded as one of the best gk's in South America highlighted by the fact that he has already been capped 10 times by his country.

I assume the player must still need to pass a medical & get his work permit to conclude the deal.

All we need now is another defender & 1 or 2 central midfielders and I think we will go in to the new season with a great chance of winning the league again.

Hopefully just sign Christanval for cover and get a striker and a central midfielder. I don't think we need to throw big money into the defense. Christanval is fine and a good alternative to Cygan.

And I don't think Viera will have any problem with a work permit, even if he doesn't meet the national team appearance requirement, there's a very good chance he has an Italian or Spanish grandparent (very common in Uruguay), making him eligible for an E.U. passport, which negates the need for a permit does it not?

Got this from another forum

Just in: Arsenal about to sign <He's flying to England now> arguably (well, not really arguable) THE sensation of this South American WC Qualifyers, Uruguayan goalie, Sebastian Viera.

Though, Wegner was quoted saying "It's not a done deal" at ARsenal.com this morning. JUST now, he had a meeting with an Agent (acording to Argentine News channel and many new links online) that said the deal is pretty much set as Wegner told Viera to pack up and fly to England RIGHT now.

<for those who can read spanish>

FIFA.com - "Future Star on the rise" article, to see who he is.

(Just as history for those outside of South America who don't know him)

He was being tugged by so many clubs from Spain and Italy but I gotta say (as he does too), I would have chosen Arsenal in a heart beat. <and they've been studying him for over a year and a half......so they obviously know what they are doing when buying a player>

you guys are SO lucky (if you get him...which you'll most likely will). Like I'm completely honest when I talk about the recent fall in the URuguayan league and the limited great players to be sold (I'll be the first to say: X has just been sold to Arsenal.....but he kinda sucks).

But Viera is poised to be Top 5 if not the best goalie in the world one day. ALL he does is train and perfect any mistake he makes.....he's incredible and by far the greatest most promising talent (even over Recoba or Forlan). Arsenal are gonna be really happy with him.

With all the suffering this guy went through as a kid (had to take a bus 3 towns away as a 12 year old to go to the practices for his pro club's youth team and back at 11 PM <making him have like 5 hours of sleep before going in all out>
I'm just really happy for him.

I've written an original song for the new guy:

Viera, whoa-oh oh
Vieia, whoa- oh oh
He comes from Nacional
He plays for Arsenal.

Think it will catch on?
