GG: "Through fire and water coolers.

From the lowest cubicle to the highest corner office, I fought them, the Balrogs of Reports and Performance Auditing.

(Vision of Adam peering over stacks of paper. Whisks of the mouse… clacking of keyboard… digital ‘ping’ as computer acknowledges the Enter key.)

Until at last, I uploaded my final documents and smote their weighty tasks upon the mountain of paper beside me.

(Weakened man slumps into slowly spinning office chair, clutching his NY Jets pillow)

Darkness took me. And I strayed out of thought and time.

My compact discs wheeled overhead and every day was as long as a life-age of the earth without access to the web. But it was not the end. I felt life in me again.

(“Dude, there’s donuts in the Board room!”)

I have been sent back now that my boss' work is done."

Welcome back,
Your dreams were your ticket out.

Welcome back,
To that same old place that you laughed about.

Well the names have all changed since you hung around,
But those dreams have remained and they're turned around.

Who'd have thought they'd lead ya (Who'd have thought they'd lead ya)
Here where we need ya (Here where we need ya)

Yeah we tease him a lot cause we've hot him on the spot, welcome back,
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back.

I confess, I watched the Two Towers last week.

Kudos for the Kotter reference! I loved waiting for Kaplan's lame joke at the end of each episode. Great stuff.

So I go on hiatus and you guys lose the team captain, eh? Can't turn my back for a second...! ;)

Oh, and the dating advice seems dead on. Affairs of the heart are such weighty matters, but the rewards of a game played true are endless!

OK, while I don't want this to turn into Mike's personal therapy thread, there is something really bothering me today that I need to share...

Last night, my ex-girlfriend took me out to dinner for my birthday. While we were out, she told me we needed to stop by her parents' as they had a surprise for me. It was easy to figure out what the surprise was, as her mom's lemon merange pie had been my birthday favorite for every year of the seven we were together. However, once we got to the house, not only was there pie, but they had hung up a "Happy Birthday" banner, and a huge pile of presents for me. My ex had no prior knowledge of anything but the pie, so she was as surprised as I was, but in a good way.

Now, just under twenty-four hours ago, I was feeling great, as I had just made that date with the girl from Match.com, now I feel depressed as hell.

It's obvious that my ex's parents miss me, and that just makes me really sad, as I miss them almost as much as I miss their daughter. During dinner, my ex let slip that she had gone out with someone she met on Match on Saturday night, and I found myself getting upset - even though I have a date lined up for Friday.

Well, that's it really, just typing what's on my mind. I can't really share it with anyone else, because they all think I should just move on, but, with nights like last night, it's just harder than I ever imagined.

Thanks.

Dude, I know exactly how you feel. I have a daughter with a girl I was married to for seven years and my ex's parents and I were closer during that period of time than I was with my parents.

I have to see them all the time because of my daughter and because of that I have had continuing contact with them even since we spilt up, its a bad deal because I know they are pissed at me royally but deep down they really do love me.

Been more than a year now, and its not getting easier.......... my advice would be that if you know you are gonna have to continue to see these people because of extended family, work, neighborhood, etc.....well. just hang in there, if not.......I'd avoid them

We lost a few other things while you were gone too:

phishy and GP lost Billy Bong Thornton

ZANI lost the remainder of his sanity

Ralphie lost an eye shooting his new BB gun in the backyard

Oh, and Catfish lost his love for Barca in favor of Real Madrid

(Sadly, the last one is true)

Thanks for the Family Guy ref - I love that show. I totally plan on going on that date on Friday night, but here's the thing - my ex and I have plans for Saturday night. Do I break them? I don't really want to. It seems to me like the shallow thing to say would be to wait to see how Friday night turns out, but, there may be more truth to that than I care to admit.

Go on the date Friday and keep your plans for Saturday. Maybe even tell her you went out the night before. She is doing the same right now as well. It may even startle her into thinking more about your relationship if she thinks you may not just be sitting around waiting on her. Just my $0.02.

What's that one all about? I can't see how a Gooner not from Madrid could have any type of affection for the state-bankrolled royals.

I like your thinking. It's pretty much the conclusion I came to while sitting in the meeting I just got back from. :)

Thanks to everyone for all the kind words and encouragement. It was just a bit surreal, because for a few moments last night, it was as if we had never broken up at all. I mean, her parents had "31" candles on the pie, all three of them sang to me, and took pictures of me blowing out the candles!

That's a bit effed up if you ask me. I can see how it put the zap on your head. I think the best course of action is to move forward and see what develops and follow your feelings. I don't really have the same background though, as the only really long relationship I have had (besides high school shenanigans) is my current one, and I don't plan on ending that soon!

I don't think so. I hadn't heard of it till yesterday and don't know anything about it. But since it stars John Cusack it caught my, and my wife's, interest.

Miss Lane also caught my, um, interest, too.

I did see "Wedding Crashers" and it is hilarious.Haven't been able to make that one yet, and would have to do so without the Mrs. Doesn't seem like her bag.

I agree, that sounds a bit left of center. Without knowing all the details I'm curious if the ex has told the parents everything.

Still, there's nothing wrong with you being friends with whomever you want. So long as you're not putting on false fronts with anyone they've no reason to fault you and you should simply do what feels right. Even in an exclusive relationship you should be able to act without guilt, assuming that partner has taken you for who you really are.

Seeing no ring on your finger, then...

From the excellent "Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs" by Chuck Klosterman: (http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-reviews/A5AUQ5R754O6E/ref=cm_cr_auth/104-6438118-7001509?%5Fencoding=UTF8)

"I once loved a girl who almost loved me, but not as much as she loved John Cusack. ... If Cusack and I were competing for the same woman, I could easily accept losing. However, I don't really feel like John and I were "competing" for the girl I'm referring to, inasmuch as her relationship to Cusack was confined to watching him as a two-dimensional projection, pretending to be characters who don't actually exist. [This should have] given me a huge advantage over Johnny C., insasmuch as my relationship with this woman including things like "talking on the phone" and "nuzzling under umbrellas" and "eating pancakes." However, I have come to realize that I perceived this competition completely backward; it was definitely an unfair battle, but not in my favor. It was unfair in Cusack's favor. I never had a chance."

SO who won that pool? I had 9 weeks. :D
Nobody. We did it by "Price is Right" rules, where it was closest without going over. Lowest was a week. ZANI lasted about six hours by my watch. :D

What's that one all about? I can't see how a Gooner not from Madrid could have any type of affection for the state-bankrolled royals.
The gist of it is that Catfish found out that he had Spanish heritage and since (in his mind) Real Madrid is the club of Spain, he thus must be a Real supporter. I believe he also now supports every national team in the world.

Anybody see "Must love dogs" yet?
Thankfully, I believe exporting that to here would be a clear violation of the Geneva Convention.

Though I'm very disappointed that John Cusack has stooped so low.
