Hi. I am a former HS and rec adult (indoor and outdoor) player (college had no soccer team) about 10 years removed from play.

I now find myself teaching HS and will probably be asst coaching next year. In the meantime, I need to shake the rust off (for credibility if nothing else) and wouldn't mind perhaps picking up a few pointers in the process. I usually relied more on instinct, positioning and knowing my abilities over technique and now it is time to pay the piper.

I am looking at the Coerver tapes, but which set should I buy?

The 1-2-3 Goal series......

or the Skills series....

For those who have seen both, is there much overlap of content between the two? From the descriptions, it is difficult to tell.

Any help from anyone who has seen either is much appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. But I think you might be able to get more response if you posted this on a coaching section as the guys there probably have more experience with soccer videos in general.

BTW, just by looking at the descriptions, I think the Skills series would be better as the 1-2-3 Goal looks focused just on beating defenders and scoring goals, whereas the Skills series is more of a general all-around skills video.

If you feel compelled to buy the Coerver tapes... then buy the 123 Goal ones, but I don't know if they will help you with your HS players. My opinion of the tapes is that they mainly focus on the technical side of soccer in general, and the individual techniques in particular (this is especially true of the first Coerver series). Don't get me wrong, I do feel that improving one's technique is useful, but it's not the most important thing by far. Rather, playing the game and improving one's vision, speed of play and so on will take HS players a lot farther.

Put another way, if you ask Dutch coaches what they think of Coerver, often times they'll say, "He's made a lot of money!" He's not well thought of, as far as I can tell.

The Coerver-method is very good for YOUNG players. First learn them the skills, then concentrate on vision, tactics, etc. These things will come with experience anyway...
