Who are some of the teams we could draw in the next round? Is it possible we get everton? How does this all work?

There are 32 teams in the third qualifying round (therefore 16 draws). Half the teams are "seeded," while the other half aren't. It is impossible for a seeded team (the top half) to play another team in the top half. The teams are seeded based on their UEFA coefficent, which is a number devised from a team's performance in all European competitions for the last five years. Because of this, if we do make it to the third round, we will be seeded first.

Everton, since they have not been in Europe for the past five years, will receive the UEFA coefficent for the country of England, which, IIRC, would put them in the bottom half. So, yes, it is possible that we could face Everton. And I wouldn't be suprised if we did.

And wouldn't that be special...!

The two teams that I would like to avoid are:
Real Betis and Udinese. 12.5% chance of getting either one.

Whatever team we get at the third round is likely to be a good team. We will have the advantage of four competitive games played, albeit against less than stellar competition.

Are they seeded?

Would be a 15M derby. That's how much the winner would get for qualifying for the group stage.

From The Guardian. (http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,1563,1537618,00.html) Moyes none too happy about the prospect of getting Liverpool in the 3rd round. Interestingly, they break down the potential opponents for each side:
Where Liverpool can, at worst, face Everton, Slavia Prague, Real Betis, Udinese or Wisla Krakow, the list of potential opponents who could be drawn against Everton is more imposing. Apart from their Merseyside rivals they could meet Internazionale, Rangers, Panathanaikos, Villarreal, Sporting Lisbon, Monaco, Ajax, Bruges, Werder Bremen or Rosenborg. Celtic, Dynamo Kiev, Anderlecht and Lokomotiv Moscow are also potential opponents, though they - like Liverpool - are midway through the second round.

didn't you already sell it for the CL winners trophy? :D

now to get mine back...

3rd round opponents I'd like to avoid... the Art Media department from uh.. wherever. fortunately they'll be seeded if they get thru.

What's Moyes bothered about? didn't they finish above us in the league last year? :p

We have nothing to gain from drawing Everton. If we win...it was expected. If we lose...its a major disaster. It would be fun, but I'd rather avoid them.

Suss55, ok, i agree we have nothing to gain and it'd be best to avoid them

I want to draw Slavia Prague - know nothing about them, except this...

(quoted from The Guardian)

"Everton's unease is shared by Slavia Prague. The Czechs, backed by their football association, renewed an appeal to the Uefa president Lennart Johansson yesterday, though it is likely to fall on deaf ears.

"We repeat again that we have nothing against the inclusion of Liverpool into the Champions League," said Slavia's general manager Vladimir Leska. "The only thing we want is that Slavia is not harmed by this."

They're already whining! Ha - bring 'em on!

Celtic sure as hell won't be in the 3rd round. They lost 5-0 in the first leg.

I would prefer not to have a match with that much pre-animosity so early in the tournament.

It's going to happen, I tell you. What simpler way to get the thorny problem of five English teams in the 2005/06 CL to solve itself? And more to the point - what other logic is there behind the quirky decision to rule that Liverpool will be the only side in the competition's qualifications rounds without "country protection"?

There's only one point in making that decision - to allow for the possibility that they face another English team.

Fixing the draw to ensure it happens is just the final step.

I put a tenner on it the day after the decision was announced and got 16/1. Sometimes, bookies are suckers.

We will play Everton. I guarantee it.

PS - Having said that, if I turn out to be wrong, I have to admit I will be reasonably pleased. Like Suss, I don't think we need that sort of aggro at the start of the season.

I'll take your action. Winner buys the pint the next time I'm in Liverpool or you end up in DC.

What could we possibly be worried about? Anything to stoke the fires a little more. (Easy for me to say when I am only around 2 Everton fans on a regular basis).

I think this would be a great time to play Everton. They have not reinforced. We are in much better form having played competitive matches already this season. And Bluenoses need a bit more comeuppance after last year's fluky season. To be honest, if we drew and beat Everton, it might be a merseyful thing for them, as they would drop out of the competition before they have made any big signings that would put their club in the RED for years to come. Seeing how unlikely it is that they will advance to the group stages anyway, at least we would guarantee them a sellout to boot, unlike Artmedia or some other side.

IMHO, even if the Bitters do make the Group stages and earn themselves £10m or so, it is going to be break-even at best, as they are having to up their wage bill after last season and it is becoming more and more clear to Moyes that he is going to have to pay very high wages to some mercenary continental players if he is to field a top of the table team and not embarrass himself in CL. As small as their squad is now, and bereft as it is of real quality, they are going to struggle to be a top-10 side again next season.

You don't really think UEFA would stoop to something like that?

. . .Oh. Wait.

I do too.
