Anybody else excited as I am? There has never been a show quite like this before (can't count MASH, it was a comedy). I've been anxious for this series to start for the longest now, and if you saw my war movie collection, you'd know why. :)
As a matter of fact, i'm so excited, I want to start a forum just on this show. I bought the domain overthereforums.com. If anybody is as excited as me about this series, PM me now! :)
So don't forget, catch it tonight at 10 PM EST on FX. The website for the show is: http://www.fxchannel.com/shows/originals/overthere/main.html

I'm looking forward to this show as well, I'm interested in how they portray the battle scenes.

80% of my interest relies on this also! If it's anything like Black Hawk Down, or the slightest bit like it, then i'm bought!

NY Times review.
Haven't read it since I probably won't watch the show, but you should assume there are spoilers in there.
I'm stickin an [R] on the thread as well.

The TV reviewer for Fresh Air on NPR just gave it a rave.

good thing you put the R in there. we don't want anyone to find out how the iraqi war ends who didn't want to! ;)

I'll be checking it out based on the quality of "The Shield", "Nip/Tuck" and "Rescue Me".

I'm hoping it portrays both the pro- and anti-war sides evenly, though I get the feeling it'll sway one way or another. I've set the Tivo.

Actually, from the commercials I've seen, it looks like it's going to focus more on the lives of the soldiers and how their dealing with it.
I'm sure they'll balance out various soldiers' opinions on the war, but my guess is that'll be incidental.

Yeah, I guess I mean I hope it has a more personal feeling. I suppose that's the point of a drama, but plenty of dramas seem to miss that.

Steven Bochco was one one of the NPR shows yesterday, and he actually said there's very little outright politics in the show at all - it's about the platoon and the lives of the characters. So he says.

Yep, and the reviewer on the show concurred.
Does that make it better or worse, I wonder?

i think making the show about their lives will make it better. it will make them seem like real people and not some war god thus helping people relate to them more. to me, that's what made movies like "we were soldiers" and "black hawk down" so good. it was the average man stepping up to accomplish something he believed in.

Not bad, not bad at all. I'll definitely tune in again.

Very good. Not political at all.
I almost didn't tune in because I missed "Rescue Me" last night (was on an airplane) and didn't want to see a spoiler in an ad. Speaking of which anyone know when last night's RM episode will be re-aired (don't want to go into the RM thread and see a spoiler so hopefully someone can answer me here)??

My Father and I watched it together (I'm visiting my folks, like anyone cares). Anyway, we both enjoyed it albeit a bit graphic. Oh, who am I kidding, it was downright violent. I just might tune in next week, now that they've "hooked" us.

Is the show supposed to be circa July 2005, or earlier? From the Fresh Air interview, all the early episodes were written by writers without being inspired by particular reports from the field. It's just that different things in the show seem to point towards different times.
I don't know about the story in the first episode. It wasn't so much a narative as it was a quick dunk for the audience into hot water to get aclimated to what I assume the rest of the season is going to be like. The battles and setting are very good considering the cable show budget and no military help. It had a Saving Private Ryan level of violence, but it didn't really look like SPR - it had very conventional camera angles.
(trying to be spoiler free here) Can someone tell me which character it was that was in the helicopter at the end of the show?

Bo.
I'm looking forward to seeing how they flesh the characters out over the coming eps.
